Hi, can anyone tell me what the obvious difference in engines are from the look of the phase 1 engine to the phase two. I was told by the previous owner that the engine was from a newer model. Where should I look first apart from the engine number. Very Happy

not a hard and fast rule but phase 1 has a pressed tin sump, phase 2 is alloy

also on the head, phase 1 has a pressed in coolant pipe on the side, sensors screwed directly into the head, phase 2 has a larger thermostat housing where the sensors live and the pipe branches off.

a few other minor differences

tin sumps are pretty rare. Only a few H plates have tin sumps. The rest ph1 or 2 have ally sumps.

The later engine like Neal said had a different thermostat housing arrangment. Again no hard and fast rules when the change happened, you can say a l plat ewill have th elater style, it may or may not.

Thanks for that. It seems the engine mileometer shows it's done 186000. but no leaks, rattles or smoke. Is this rare or have I bought a peach.

I doubt thats the original engine tbh. Theres plenty of energy's out there with that mileage but the 16V's are never treated right so they never last that long.

Thought so chris. My previous 92 j plate had 92000 and rattled like a sowing machine. But it still left most standind at the lights.....

I had ma ph1 1916v for 5yrs and sold her with 130000 on the clock, and she never missed a beat, did'nt burn oil, ran and idled perfect, but then i did change the oil every 3000miles and filter every 6000miles with good oil, and she had her coolant changes and all that stuff, but there are plenty people just abuse them and never lift the bonnet at all....should be illegal Crying or Very sad

I had a ph2 1916v when it was only 3yrs old and i swear the cabin noise is less on a ph2 than on a ph1, did the ph2's have more sound deadening pads than the ph1 ?? or was the engine just quieter on them Laughing

i think the p2s had more sound deadening along with other extras...all adding weight to it. thats why many peeps say the p1 is a faster car

ph2 doesn't have more sound deadening.

It does have thicker steel cos its a cheaper grade and the doors have the side impact bars so they are much heavier so they don't resonate as much.

cool. thought they may have fattened it out because they could.

p1s must dent easy then as the p2 is bad enough for dinging

nah fatter steel cos its a poorer grade, ph2 steel rusts easier so make it thicker reduce the effect.

ph1's are also pretty dent resistant.

if i look down the length of the top of the frt wing it is rippled....i have always imagined that it is from years of ppl pressing down on it to test the suspension and get annoyed when ppl do it...

i also get annoyed if someone tries to siton the car....

i also got VERY annoyed when one morning i discovered some idiot had decided to walk over my car...over bonnet, roof and boot....luckily all footsteps fell on strongish points...not in the middle of the bonnet or roff where it would have caved in no doubt

yes that the 19's mot testers marks.

Some wee buggers ran over the white chamade when it was still at Georges, no dents but footprints.
