Hey all,

I visited a bodyshop today to look at getting some work on both rear quarter panels sorted and sprayed on my Renault 5. He turned round and told me the figure but the said he wouldnt touch it as all of the exterior plastic trim had been resprayed (halfords bumper spray) and had back to black trim wax (turtlewax) used on it, and the silicone in both the spray and the wax reacts with the paint that any bodyshop uses and makes the spray ive used blister. He described it looking like an oil and water effect.

But surely as the trims on the bottom and the part on the quarter to be sprayed is just underneith the window this is rubbish? Is he talking out of his butt or is there something else I need to know? Is it worth me trying some other bodyshops?

any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Nope that is correct. The wax and sealant is very hard to get off, takes quite a few hours to fully degrease.

But what confuses me is that the areas are too different areas.the bit that has had back to black was the bumpers and side trims, which surely would be covered up when hes spraying the rear quarter under the window blue?

Theres a pic of the problem, is it right that because I have used back to black wax on the lower plastic panels I cant get that bit sprayed?

maybe he's being a lazy arse. ask him what he would want you to do to it before taking to him.

most of the cost is in the prep i imagine as it is very labour intensive, so should also save yourself a bit of money too.

Buy some degreaser or panel wipe as its known. As dan said it takes a while to degrease but just keep rubbing at it with the degreaser until its free of grease. Why dont you just paint it yourself? Itll be alot cheaper. Non metalics are easy to match too. halfrauds are usually a good match.

Yeh I work for halfords but I was always under the impression it will never be near as good as if you took it to a bodyshop?

with aerosols (cellulose i think) you get an orange peel effect, after you've sprayed it and its dry rub it down with some 1200 or finer wet and dry with water till its all flat then t-cut it up and itll be like glass. i sorted all mine out myself after hitting a wall Crying or Very sad
