A friends grandfather had an accident and as a result his car was sitting idle and going to the scrappy. I was asked if I wanted it. Yes was the reply as always.

So on the 29th of October 2004 the car was mine.

What did I need with a crappy 1993 Ford Orion? nothing thats what, however I like to give my mum cars so it was signed in her name and she had a new car. This was also the period when Project Y's clutch had gone pop.

The car was taxed until the 31st of Oct so only a day left on it and was MOT'd until the 15th of Nov if I remember correctly.

30th October

Daylight and it had been a good few months since I had last seen the car in daylight. It was a bit dirty to say the least, as it had sat for a while.

As the pictures show it was in dire need of a clean. There were also a few issues that needed sorting for the MOT.

Anyway 2 days later I eventually got around to washing it.

this was just a blast off with the pressure washer

[img:640:480:2f6347da2f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20clean%2001.jpg[/img:2f6347da2f]

again clean side, that was full of green slimy goo

[img:640:480:2f6347da2f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20clean%2007.jpg[/img:2f6347da2f]

Sadly the pictures were on the camera phone thus not that great, it looks drastic here but to have seen it in the flesh was amazing, again pre soap, just a blast off with the jet wash

[img:640:480:2f6347da2f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20clean%2008.jpg[/img:2f6347da2f]

Note driveway wasn't finished!

[img:640:480:2f6347da2f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20clean%2009.jpg[/img:2f6347da2f]

The Ford badge, couldn't take the pressure, the pressure washer blasted it clean off!

note missing trim, this wing had been replaced, the colour was slightly different. You can also see the crazing in the lower black section of the wing.

looks a lot better eh! Thats just a simple wash.

[img:640:480:2f6347da2f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20clean%2015.jpg[/img:2f6347da2f]

As it was after the wash I could have probably got at least 50 quid for it, considering all I did was wash it thats a good deal. But My mum needed a car so I had to get it sorted.

There was a squeak from the engine and I narroewed it down to the corroded heatshield.

Heatshield off and egr pipes exposed

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20heatshield%2001.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

this shows the corroded part, this was rubbing on the engine

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20heatshiled%2002.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20heatshiled%2003.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

I removed the damaged section and refitted the heatshield, the problem was resolved.

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20heatshiled%2004.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

I also gave the TB a quick clean, look at how pathetically small it is, no wonder the 130 versions had a bigger TB!

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20TB%2001.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

This is the alarm siren, it used to chirp now and again, unplugged it until I sorted the issue.

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

The actual horn never worked, so I set about seeing what the problem was. I wanted to check the rings on the column

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2002%20.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

Thsi is what the ignition barrel turns, on fords this just pulls off, and yes turn it with a screwdriver and the car starts. Secure!

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2003.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

continuity was there at the rings so I pulled the horn off and this pic shows me testing the horn, which wa sdead

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2004.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

getting to the horn wiring, I later just pulled the bumper off

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2005.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

dead horn

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2006.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

So I took a Renault horn to use

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2007.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

Wired it in and it came on and stayed on! Possibly why the old one had died. So front of the steering wheel off and sure enough the contacts were touching, bent them out and they were fine

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2008.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

the horn bolted up to the bracket on the front of the car behind the bumper

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2009.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

front bumper off

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2010.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

horn again

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2011.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

bumper

[img:640:480:0058c0cda7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20horn%2012.jpg[/img:0058c0cda7]

Defective horns seem to be a common issue on cars I get!

The boot lock didn't work, it wouldn't turn at all, you could use the interior handle to pop the boot so it wasn't a huge problem.

So i took the lock barrel out

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20boot%20lock%2001.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

I scraped all sorts of crud out of this hole

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20boot%20lock%2002.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20boot%20lock%2003.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

I stripped it further to clean it up and lube it

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20boot%20lock%2004.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

This actually allowed it to work, for about a week then is bloody refused to turn, the key was worn, it unlocked the doors etc but not the boot.

I cleaned out the interior, after the clean it was a pleasant enough place to be

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20int.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

the rear passenger footwell was wet, it never happened again, I eventually settled on the fact it got wet when I gave the car its initial thorough wash.

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20leak.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

The engine induction pipework proudly displaying the cars feeble power output.

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20105.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

There was some convincing evidence the cambelt had been done, this 68k written on the cam cover was the main one.

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20cambelt%2001.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

I took the cover off just to check, it was pretty loose but I couldn't be bothered tightening it at that point.

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20cambelt%2002.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

some powder on the inside of the cover due to the belts looseness and it slapping about

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20cambelt%2003.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

There was starting issues with the car, best thing you could do was start it and leave it running for about 5 mins before setting of, it stalled easily, but when warm it was fine.

I took the TB off for a good clean up as the pics show its wansn't spotless but it wasn't overly dirty either.

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20tb%2002.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20tb%2003.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20tb%2004.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

cleaned and refitted

[img:640:480:74ebcc5989]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20tb%2005.jpg[/img:74ebcc5989]

I never had time that day to clean the ICV, I can't recall why but I just never.

The car was parked on the half finished driveway, it was moved the next morning and I noted this

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20rust%20stain%2001.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

I knew what it would be and a quick look confirmed it, battery tray

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20rust%20stain%2002.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

A problem for another day I said.

The back brakes were in need of sorting, this pic is fuzzy but it shows the build up of crap in the arch lip

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20rear%20brakes%2001.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

crap, even a non car person could look at that and say crap

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20rear%20brakes%2002.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

Drum off

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20rear%20brakes%2003.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

handbrake lever was stuck solid so shoes off to free it off

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20rear%20brakes%2004.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

this is the utter crap ford self adjuster set up, yes thats a round wheel and a quadrant, teeth are tiny and strip easily, it was all seized up and teeth were damaged so I sorted that out and the brakes then worked fine

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20rear%20brakes%2005.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

I got some service parts for the car, plugs and filter etc

Air filter housing, thats the MAF that has the electrical plug on it

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20filter%2001.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

inside the box

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20filter%2002.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

this is where a small foam filter lives, the crankcase breather dumps into there. The wet oily bit is the foam filter!

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20filter%2003.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

the air filter, past its best

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20filter04.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

air filter housing cleaned up

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20filter%2005.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

cleaning the foam filter out

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20filter%2006.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

clean

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20filter%2007.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

new air filter

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20filter%2008.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

this is the MAF after I gave it a gentle cleaning

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20air%20flow%20meter.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

I did this day clean the ICV

ICV off and the TB again to get to it

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20icv%2001.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

ICV

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20icv%2002.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20icv%2003.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

the 2 parts of it, it cleaned up very well

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20icv%2004.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

I then changed the plugs

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20sparkplugs%2001.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

old and new plugs side by side, they deffo needed changed

[img:640:480:202b5c2f3e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20sparkplugs%2002.jpg[/img:202b5c2f3e]

Sadly this never helped the running problem from cold. I even tried new CTS's etc as you will see later but never helped.

25th November 2004

I decided to have a look at the battery tray, so battery out, this earth wasn't even attached! It was trapped under the battery

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20batt%2001.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

the tray, nice, this is what happens when your not sensible like renault and fit a plastic tray with its own drain under the battery!

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20batt%2002.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20batt%2003.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20batt%2004.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

after washing it off with a freshly boiled kettle, see the hole?

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20batt%2005.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

I just slapped silicone in the hole as a temporary fix - that means it was like that until the car was sold.

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20batt%2006.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

the wire that wasn't attached? Cleaned up nicely

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20batt%2007.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

you can see the wire from the inner wing going over to the batt neg terminal

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20batt%2008.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

The car had been taken for an MOT and had failed. On emmisions alone.

Everything was fine apart from CO. It was 0.8 instead of 0.5

After messing around I had ascertained that it was the CAT. A new cat cost 80 quid I think, might have been more I can't recall

new cat incl downpipe

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20exhaust%2001.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

not very good is it!

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20exhaust%2004.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

The lambda sensor also decided to drop its wires so had to get another one of those as well.

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20exhaust%2005.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

it was a universal lambda so had to crimp the lambda to the old loom

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20exhaust%2006.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

Old cat, note the downpipe is a twin effort, new one single pipe

[img:640:480:d640a5203a]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20exhaust%2007.jpg[/img:d640a5203a]

The old cat had been hollowed out. The new cat on and the car passed the mot.

The passenger side face vent wasn't working

[img:640:480:c621e072b1]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20vent%2001.jpg[/img:c621e072b1]

vent out for repair

[img:640:480:c621e072b1]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20vent%2002.jpg[/img:c621e072b1]

now it was open to let air through

[img:640:480:c621e072b1]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20vent%2003.jpg[/img:c621e072b1]

much better

[img:640:480:c621e072b1]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20vent%2004.jpg[/img:c621e072b1]

The passenger side door opening wouldn't get the interior light working, the ford switches are very simple so I knew I could sort this out easily

[img:640:480:c621e072b1]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20switch%2001.jpg[/img:c621e072b1]

switch out

[img:640:480:c621e072b1]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20switch%2002.jpg[/img:c621e072b1]

after cleaning the slide up and a new shiny screw it worked fine

[img:640:480:c621e072b1]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20switch%2003.jpg[/img:c621e072b1]

The car was perfectly usuable and my mum drove about quite happy and I got on with other cars.

15th December

I decided to have a go at sorting the alarm, these wires went to the microswitch on the bootlid latch

[img:640:480:2930b878e8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20boot%20wires%2001.jpg[/img:2930b878e8]

[img:640:480:2930b878e8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20boot%20wires%2002.jpg[/img:2930b878e8]

this is the plug for the electric boot popper, this car had the early cable pull one

[img:640:480:2930b878e8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20boot%20wires%2003.jpg[/img:2930b878e8]

instead of soldering the wires cos I couldn't be arsed I just used a connector block

[img:640:480:2930b878e8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20boot%20wires%2004.jpg[/img:2930b878e8]

Did the alarm now work? Nope. Did I bother going further? nope, crap car, crap alarm whats the point. If it was a ferrari or something then it would have been sorted.

5th January 2005

The cold start problem i reckoned was down to an iffy CTS, so I got another one, actually I got a whole load of them from the scrappy.

Where it lived

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20CTS%2001.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20CTS%2002.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

cleaned one up

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20CTS%2003.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20CTS%2004.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

trieed 3 or 4 over a week or so, made no difference until it was warmed up and then each made the car rougher to differing degrees.

31st January 2005

Went to the scrappy again and got some booty, not all for the Orion.

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20scrappy%20haul%2001.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

this was the old clock, it had been damged at the mot, I had the heater fan on full and it had melted the clock!

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20scrappy%20haul%2002.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

Mileage after 3 months, about 1500 miles, my mum never liked the car to drive so never used it much.

21st Feb

There was a slight squeak and I wanted to nip up the cambelt a bit

tensioner out

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20belt%2005.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

cracks appearing

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20belt%2006.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

I put it back together as I knew we would be getting rid soon and I would tell the new owner to get it done, the retensioned belt made it go faster so that was nice.

4th May

The CV gaiter had split so I got a new gaiters to fit, CV off

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20cv%20rebuild%2001.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

new inner CV gaiter fitted and cleaned up CV

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20cv%20rebuild%2002.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

outer gaiter fitted

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20cv%20rebuild%2003.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

a wee splodge of the old grease

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20cv%20rebuild%2004.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

CV fitted back onto the shaft

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20cv%20rebuild%2005.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

ta-da!

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20cv%20rebuild%2006.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

There was another issue that happened when removing the driveshaft. The very bad Ford design of the front hubs meant the pinch bolt snapped, the wheel bearing had gone as well so was getting done as well

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20fb%2001.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20fb%2002.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

This was a bit of a problem, I went to my mot place and tried to get them to weld a bolt on to get it out, of course that never worked as they cannae bloody weld. So i took another course of action, cut through the shank through the slot, get the strut out, then cut the bolts shank out in slices then drill the threaded bit out, it worked.

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20fb%2003.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20fb%2004.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

everytime a section was cut out I punched the shank into the hole to get he next part

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20fb%2005.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

got the shank out eventually

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20fb%2006.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

put the strut etc back on the car

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20fb%2007.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

where the shaft slots into on the box

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20fb%2008.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

shaft on

[img:640:480:b3d61bf0b3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Orion/orion%20fb%2009.jpg[/img:b3d61bf0b3]

Ran out of pictures, the hub went back on with its new bearing etc.

The red car (project Y) had been mot'd since early march and my mum just wanted the orion gone as she felt the 19 was a better car which it is. So the car went into the paper and in mid May I sold it for £250.

£250 isn't a lot considering what was left on it, it needed taxed but it had all the new parts etc.

The car done its job and we all had to use it for a day or 2 so we all knew the car.

Sad to see it go? Nope.
