why red relief? Cos this car means I can get the red 3 door turbo'd, so its being relieved from active service soon.

Anyway a grey ph1, 1994 L plate, 1.2 Liberte mofo gangsta clio bad boy terror wagon.

Oh yeah its bad, lock up your daughters

done some poking about yesterday, it had clearly not been serviced in a while. So after finally gettign the air box cover off I was greeted with this

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20air%20filter%2001.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

a wee bit blocked

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20air%20filter%2002.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

what it used to look like, this is the inside btw

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20air%20filter%2003.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

theres the oily TB

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20tb%2001.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

a quick squirt of carb cleaner. i will sort it properly later

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20tb%2002.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

the engine has been replaced, wiring channels etc are not bolted up right and this on the inlet manifold confirms it!

[img:378:567:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20engine%20change%20evidence.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

I got the wheel off to have a look at the crap brakes, I knew the sliders would be siezed

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20osf%20brake%2001.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

After gettign the disc off and pads out and a lot of hammer action I finally got the sliders greased up, the brakes are worse now because they can move properly! lol But the wehole disc is starting to clear. I need to do the other side.

a wee bit of an oil leak

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20osf%20liner%20oil%20leak.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

got the drum off, some retard has lost/removed the self adjusting bit of the rear brakes which is why the pedal travels to the floor, need to get those

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20osr%20brake%2001.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

looks reasonably clean in there

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20osr%20damper.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

Bodywork wise the rear arches need some attention as does the front passenger wing, the rest of the car is covered in dings from carparks, theres a blue and a red cars door mark on the front pass door!

Anyway this is the rear drivers arch

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20osr%20arch%2001.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20osr%20arch%2002.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

[img:567:378:b7f36c34d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20osr%20arch%2003.jpg[/img:b7f36c34d8]

So I need to sort the corrosion, get the brakes sorted, I will upgrade the brakes to girling calipers, give a damn good service, a good thorough clean and a passenger front indicator then it should be fit for the road!

Is it definately a 1.2 it was replaced with and not a 1.4?

Just thinking as you said it seemed quite nippy, but wasn't sure if it was that much quicker.

well I sorted the rear washer the other day, its not mounted right and even squirts.

Today I freed off the nsf caliper. I also found a pad that was slightly worn, so had to use one fromt he red 19.

[img:567:378:98f7c47d17]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20nsf%20inner%20pad.jpg[/img:98f7c47d17]

Still to sort the rears.

Heres the interior after its clean

[img:567:378:98f7c47d17]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20int%20clean%2001.jpg[/img:98f7c47d17]

spare wheel has a nice new tyre on it, not bad eh! I fitted it to the cage after I eventually got the thing free!

[img:567:378:98f7c47d17]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20new%20spare%20tyre.jpg[/img:98f7c47d17]

I then gave it a good wash, this got rid of all the green moss, also blasted some paint away on the rear arches.

[img:567:378:98f7c47d17]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20washed%2001.jpg[/img:98f7c47d17]

Looks ok eh!

Then I set about sorting the sunroof, like the others in the scrappy the handle was broken off.

After defeatign the stripped screw I got it apart, this is where the handle mounts

[img:567:378:98f7c47d17]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/clio%20sunroof%2001.jpg[/img:98f7c47d17]

where is goes into the roof

[img:567:378:98f7c47d17]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/clio%20sunroof%2002.jpg[/img:98f7c47d17]

the wee bits you need to unscrew to get the handle and its pin back in, yes 1 of them is broken.

[img:567:378:98f7c47d17]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/clio%20sunroof%2003.jpg[/img:98f7c47d17]

sunroof open and handle back in place as it should be!

todayI changed the rear drivers brakes over with the red cars, incl the drum.

red car drum off, leaky wheel cylinder

[img:567:378:cab95ac325]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20rear%20brake%20change%2001.jpg[/img:cab95ac325]

I then just cleaned and adjusted the clio passenger side rear brakes. needs a wheel cylinder and the brake pipe could do with being replaced.

Also cable tied the handbrake cable onto the torsion bar as it should be so it no longer dangles.

The beast went through its mot this morning.

We then went and got the service bits, yes a bit back to front way of doing things but hey, it passed!

Service bits, top in clockwise order, air filter, oil filter, dogbone, rear wheel cylinder, wiper blades, cambelt and spark plugs.

[img:567:378:891dd7fc9e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20service%20bits.jpg[/img:891dd7fc9e]

I forgot to get the cam cover gasket, like many other clios the cam cover gasket was never fitted right and as a result has been blown out and its been leaking oil - forever. So it needs a really good clean.

All I done today was drop in athe new air filter, what a difference that alone has made, its a lot quicker, look at this compared to the old filter further up!

[img:567:378:891dd7fc9e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20new%20air%20filter%20fitted.jpg[/img:891dd7fc9e]

I also unblocked the top coolant header tank return hose.

I also semi fixed the parcel shelf with a cable tie and punching hole sin it. The scrappy shelves are all buggered as well.

Just need to fit the service items then the car will be in fine fettle. Also fit new rear dampers.

Chris,

If when you remove the rear drums, the bearing comes apart what does that signify? Drum removed wrongly or bearing not pressed in correctly?

it signifies the bearings inner bit was stuck to the stub axle, I thought that would be obvious.

pulling the drum off at an angle can cause it as can corrosion between it and the stub axle, you normally find them dry to.

half of them pop apart on removal, I lube em up nicely and put it backtogther. The secret is not to fook the seal.

Yeah it is obvious but i wondered what the cause of it stick to the stub was.

Once the hub nut is off, is the use of a hub puller necessary or should they just pull off the axel?

On my old car i got the drum off by using a chisel to pry it out. Not the best idea so my next attempt i used a puller but it fooked the bearing. Just doing it wrong i guess.

leave the wheel on and pull.

it shoudl slide off no bother, but chances are gay owners have not maintained it and theres a wear lip on the inside off the drum that catches the drum, so you really need to pull the wheel.

I hate doing it as I have pulled the car off the stands a few times.

MOT emmisions in case anyone is interseted, bear in mind this was before I serviced it which I have tyet toi finish! lol

So dodgy oil soaked plugs and that blocked filter.

fast idle test

CO 0.199 - max limit is 0.200 - lol
HC 41ppm max limit is 200ppm - no bother
lambda 1.018 min limit - 0.970 max limit 1.030

Natural idle test

CO 0.015 max klimit 0.300 - easy!

should be a lot better now the filters changed, even better with new oil and plugs.

Early start on it today. First job was the dog bone

heres the old and new, the old one was very soft

[img:567:378:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20dog%20bone%20fitting%2001.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

where it goes

[img:378:567:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20dog%20bone%20fitting%2002.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

new one fitted

[img:378:567:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20dog%20bone%20fitting%2003.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

Made a definate difference.

Next job was the cam cover gasket. It was missing bits and had been pissing oil out for who knows how long.

Airbox off and you can see some of the oil

[img:378:567:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20cam%20cover%2001.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

the plugs are submerged in oil btw

[img:567:378:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20cam%20cover%2002.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

the top of the box, soaked in oil from the cam cover

[img:378:567:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20cam%20cover%2003.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

cover off, nothing was touched, look at how the gasket is sitting

[img:378:567:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20cam%20cover%2004.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

[img:567:378:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20cam%20cover%2005.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

whats that? yes 2 gaskets were on there!

[img:567:378:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20cam%20cover%2006.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

new metal style gasket fitted

[img:378:567:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20cam%20cover%2007.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

Now the engine is hopefully oil tight I can get it blasted down then change the plugs etc.

I also cleaned up the engine number since the airbox was off and it is indeed a 1.2 engine in there, E7F beast!

[img:378:567:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%201.2%20proof%2001.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

[img:378:567:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%201.2%20proof%2002.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

after chopping a section out of a spare dash loom i remade the radio loom and fitted the radio out of the red car

[img:567:378:27eac4f817]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20radio%20fitted.jpg[/img:27eac4f817]

Cam cover has stopped the oil leak.

I cleaned the HT leads so the renault writing is clear on them this not only looks better it prevents miss fires!

I changed the spark plugs. I took a pic of the old and new, but for some reason the camera says it doesn't recognise the file type! How the hell that works I have no idea!

The old plugs had clearly not been changed in a very long time, they were reluctant to come out and when they did the gap was large and the electrodes had pitted and were rounded.

new NGK's were fitted and copper grease applied to the threads. Starts a bit quicker, seems a tad smoother, hopefully the fuel bill will show benefits.

I cleaned the inside of the windows etc so thats all crystal clear.

In the boot I refitted the wiper motor trim panel and I also had a look at the heated rear window connectors.

They seemed a bit corroded, so I unplugged them and this is what I saw

[img:567:378:839b2c74e3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20HRW%20connectors.jpg[/img:839b2c74e3]

I wire brushed them back to clean and hopefully thats sorted that, can't test the glass as its to hot and dry! There is 12 V at the screen so it should be fine.

I then set about the oil change. The oil was very black and was well past it, again who knows when this and the filter were last changed

[img:378:567:839b2c74e3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20oil%20change%2001.jpg[/img:839b2c74e3]

this is the old filter, I had to really belt the thing off

[img:378:567:839b2c74e3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20oil%20change%2002.jpg[/img:839b2c74e3]

the new oil filter with the obligitory CHR, mileage and date on it

[img:378:567:839b2c74e3]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20oil%20change%2003.jpg[/img:839b2c74e3]

So all that remains is the coolant flush, cambelt, rear wheel cylinder, brake pipe and a touch up of the rear arches.

The cars going though. My mum doesn't like it as its not fast enough, theres no toys and in her words its "a cheap nasty piece of shite compared to the 19".

So if anyone wants it then send me a sensible offer.

the other day I tackled the boot lock.

I knew what the problem was, the tumblers were stuck fully shoved up thus the lock couldn't turn.

Thios was a combination of the cars long lay up and damaged flappy thingy on the key hole.

wd-40 and rost off ice never helped so I pulled the thing out

[img:567:378:000c2ab920]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20boot%20lock%2001.jpg[/img:000c2ab920]

got the front off and cleaned it out

[img:567:378:000c2ab920]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20boot%20lock%2002.jpg[/img:000c2ab920]

[img:567:378:000c2ab920]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20clio%20boot%20lock%2003.jpg[/img:000c2ab920]

basically after some heat, oil and banging it the tumblers are now free so the boot lock works.

Which is nice.

Been busy at my sisters flat so it still needs the belt, coolant and rear brake sorted.

Today I replaced the rear dampers.

I knew they were well past their best.

I replaced them with used but good 1.4 rt dampers.

An rt damper fitted

[img:567:378:689ff6a7ed]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20rear%20shock%2001.jpg[/img:689ff6a7ed]

an old 1.2 damper, the good one no less

[img:567:378:689ff6a7ed]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/grey%20rear%20shock%2002.jpg[/img:689ff6a7ed]

Drivers side old one wasn't to bad. The passenger side was doing nothing at all.

With the new dampers pushing the back down it now returned once instead of wallowing about. To drive its a lot lot better, far more stable.

I also put the new spare tyre on so the rear tyres now match as well.

well today I fitted a new exhaust from the CAT back.

shiny and new, bling.

Anyway its now nice and quiet as you would expect as it had broken at the mid to back box join! The exhaust was holed around the hangers as well. Looked like the original not so 13 years isn't to bad tbh.
