Right, nice sunny day. Nothin better to do than whip off the pullies and give them a clean and paint. Socket and 15mm or what ever it is, snap off inlet pulley captive nut, then I thought I had done the same to exhaust. Go to de-tension the belt but was planning on getting new one this Friday anyway so flip open the knife and chop that bad boy. Unbolt inlet, take it off and stick it in the fairy liquid and hot water. Go under the car and pull out the cam belt. Go to take off the exhaust pulley, but NNOOOOOOOOOO! By the hand of Lucifer that anal retentive cross dressing git, the nut has miraculously re-tightened itself to levels of which Conan the Warrior himself would not attain. Right I know, jam as much shit as I can between the cam pulley spokes…. Nope. Wrap the cam belt round it, seems to work, so I am now on top of the engine, my knee balanced the cam belt, and the rest of me furiously tugging on the ratchet…. Go go go, nearly…. Nearly FUCK! Cam belt escapes my knee, knuckles accelerate towards the bulkhead at de-atomising speeds, and the cam turns a good 180 if not 360.… so needless to say as I type this I am in a lot of pain and believe it or not bleeding on the keyboard nearly 24 hours later.

So, have I bent any valves? If so thank god cause it means I can get this car taken out of my car park and go buy something new at the weekend.

if the blet was off the valves would have pushed the pistons down if they were free to rotate i.e. u hadnt locked the crank up.

also what captive nut? r u talkin about the long bolts that hold the pulley to the camshaft? if u are and the engine is in the car i have bad news...the bolt is too long to come out of the pulley before it hits the arch!!! i learnt that...was freaking! gotta get the camshaft out to get the bolt out. sad innit

Arrrgghhhhhh. I really really do give up with this lump of shit. Yes the lump was in situ. To be honest I should have seen that the exhaust bolt wouldn’t come out when I was working on it. No I hadn’t lock the cranked. It wasn’t free to turn as such, as in it rotated a little, got tight then quickly turned/sharply. I’ve had enough of it.

no i mean the crank was free to turn...cams will go stiff then quickly turn as they go over the high point...i doubt u did any damage....also, dont take long to take the cam out. dont give up now....

Over an hour I struggled with that bloody exhaust pulley. There was a kiddies birthday party over the fence going on…. Bloody S Club 7 this and feckin Britney Spears that! Playing music chairs and that until I started shouting at them to shut up which a huge long argument ensued with the parents. Went to replace fuel filter, metal bracket practically came away in my hands so had to fashion a new one. Thought all the bloody fuel would have been used when the lump was running, so when the old one gets disconnected it decides to spew half of Grangemouths BP refinery into my gob.

To be honest I hope the valves are fatally wounded so I can role it down the beach and watch it sail away…..

No I haven’t snapped the cam wheel bolts, the inlet came off fine. Well, that pulley got launched into a tree at one point. The other one is still in situ, I wrapped the cut cam belt around the exhaust pulley, but for the life of me could not get it to un tighten again. Even stuck the inlet back on and wrapped the cam belt around both pullies in order to hold the little shit in place, still no go. All the neighbours were at their windows etc with me screaming at little children, throwing metal objects all over the carpark and tools bouncing off walls….. who said Sundays are peaceful?

well the pulley you bounced off a tree is no use anymore.

And the self tightening exhaust, probably stripped thread in the cam.

So it be knackered.
