easiest swap would be to a 1.4 carbed or 1.7.

To fit the gtt you need to replumb the fuel system, do the loom (uses an electric fuel pump you see).

Same for a 16V etc.

They are not hard but it takes a first timer more than a day to do.

if i put a 1.4 or 1.7 in the r5 is it a case of reusing the existing loom etc?

I have been looking into doing a valver conversion and have started to buy some bits and all looks ok ish at the moment its just the wiring side of things im worried about. The other option was to have the engine and box and ancillaries from the 1.7 turbo volvo's and do that. I have now found a good write up on doing this so if you want the info let me know. I would allways allow a good few days for an engine change just incase stuff goes wrong. or a spare car.

yes you can use the existing loom as long as its a carb'd engine otherwise you have to piece out the loom for it to match the body wiring of the 5. gtx lump or a gtl/gts lump will go straight in and the engine loom will conect onto the body loom on the conector block on the nearside front wing by the headlight.

for clio read R5. MK1 clio is the same as a R5 same floor, loom etc (loom is the same for the energy engine as for the fuel injected 5 (late campus model)). yes the volvo engine will fit because the block is the same as the F7P/ f3n (gtx lump) and the sub frame is the same as the 5.

please note when reffering to mk1 clio think R5 and ask has anybody done this convesion to a 5 if the answer is yes then it can be done it may be hard but it can be done. Wink

the 5 injection loom is so different to the clio injection loom the only thing similar is the fact they use wires.
