Hi guys my R5 1.7gtx is being a bitch, when i try to start him either from warm or cold he sometimes takes a while to start and then once started seems like he is only running on three cylinders and then trys to cut out unless i give him some gas, while i am giving him some right footed action he takes a while to pick up then spurts out some black smoke and all is well, for the time being. (This problem seems to be random and can happen at any time) also he seems to run on sometimes, and petrol consumption is very poor. Could it be time for a new carb and timing to be done? Your thoughts and suggestions are most appreciated.

clean the carb out thoroughly.

Theres an anti run on solenoid on these carbs as well. It basically shoves a plunger over the idle circuit.

The timing is not adjustable but change the plugs anyway, have a gander at the leads, cap and rotor arm and see if they need replaced as well.

Cheers Chris checked and re-gapped the plugs the other day, checked the dizzy cap and rotor arm and they seem fine after a little clean up. Leads could do with replacing the same with the air filter. will do this and give the carb a clean and let you know how it's going. Will the little computer box thingy have anything to do with it?
