Chris, Coz you are an absolute god with motors. (Cant you just tell i need help here)
What would make a loud clunking noise come from the rear suspension.
Only just started today. Current suspects are torsion bar or Shocker.
Oh yeah I know i got a megane but they are the same basic setup as the 19's arent they.

Thanks in advance

lower bushes on the rear dampers, on the inclined dampers like the clio and megane the bottom bush takes more of a hammering and wears out quite quickly.

if you lie down and grab the base of the shocks and give them a good tug there shoudl be no/little movement. If theres a clicking/clunkign then that will make a lot of racket on the move. Might be lucky and the bolt might only need nipped up.

But if could be other things, handbrake cable, loose spare wheel, the lower shocker bolt catching on the exhaust heatsheild (more of a twany and grating noise) etc etc

Shockers would be my 1st suspect.

If you bounce the car up and down it sort of "clicks" past a certain point.
You ever heard of torsion bars going and doing this

nah the torsion bar won't be the problem. If it goes so far then clicks and its on the passenger side then its hitting the heatsheild, they all do it, use pliers to move it.

dunno if its the same set up on the megane, but on my old 19 p1 hatch, both rear shockers had a shoulder welded onto the top of the strut which sat against the inside of the turret...nut on top inside....

anyway the washer shoulder thingy just rusted away and the damper strut just shot thru into the boot area....the torsion bar kept it sprung but the end of the strut just moved in and out knocking the rear shelf and things when going over bumps.

if the shocker is sticking then clicking as it passes the shockers kanckered. Bent piston more than likely, although if it has a solid dust cover (metal bit that slides over the actual damper) then that may be catching on it.

The megane design is different to the 19 JB the 19's is better the megane has the dampers angled forwards around 45 degrees and uses bolts top and bottom to secure it.

Easy enough to change though.

Well just got the car back from the garage.
148 quid later and its fixed. 2 Lovely new shocks on it.
Only one of them was actually broken but i assume its a matter of course to replace both.

Back end feels alot stiffer now. Cant bounce it as much anymore.
