rear wheel bearing???

i am slowly identifying all those annoying noises on my 1.8 rt hatch ,its really much easier when the stereo is off anyway .

what would be the cause of a constant whining noise coming from the rear (possibly rear left) of the car ,i can certainly say it is not ependant on the engine speed but the speed of the car . i.e the noise is still there when i put it in neutral while driving with 40-50 etc .

are there any chances of this being related to a rear wheel bearing ? and how can i check it ?

got to sort out this car before i can drive up to manchester at the end of the month Crying or Very sad

see if it gets noisier when you turn.

my chamade sounds like a spitfite on hard right bends, has done for about 5k miles.

could not do the turn test yet but managed to get both rear wheels out and spinned them by hand, i spin the passenger side and leave it to slow down and i can see it stopping at one point due to some friction and continiue the spin and stop but drivers side is well smooth and turns more freely .

does it sound like a wheel bearing ?

its not the chammy huw ,its an ordinary renault 19 and got drums at the back

how hard is it to change the rear wheel bearing then ? will i need specialist tools etc????

rear wheel bearing should be ok unless its cooked then you'll need to swap th drums as it welds itself in but yours isn;t that bad.

Also drum go out of round easily so the stickign test isn't really a definate guide.

when i was tryin to trace a bad wheel bearing i found if u jack each wheel up in turn, spin the wheel and put ur ear to the arch above it, the bad one is noticably louder than the good ones.

thats what my passenger side rear wheel is like ,it sounds noisier than the others and slows down quicker

I already said it should be ok to do unless its melted the race to ythe drum!

so its just a matter of undoing the hubnut and taking the drum out to get to the wheel bearing ,take the old bearing out and stick the new one in. that sounds scarely easy Rolling Eyes

you better believe it mate, bought the wheel bearing (not a set inc the new nut and the bearing clip)
tried to get the hub nut out for a start ,its not having none of it . bugger ,mission aborted at the moment Evil or Very Mad

When i undid a hubnut last time, i had to use a 1,5 - 2 metre long steel pipe ontop of the wrench. The leverage did the power Cool

I would advise you to buy a new drum to put the bearing into because once you get the hub off you'll probably find it's almost impossible to drift the old bearing out of the drum.

I've done both rears and it took me hours using heat and a huge hammer. Its just not worth the trouble.

or just take the thing to a garage with a press and get them to press old out and new in....10 min job.

the garage i called yesterday was not helpfull at all ,they had this fecking attitude saying we supply and fit parts only when i asked them to fit the bearing i bought . my ass Evil or Very Mad

i found a smaller ,down to earth garage today ,one of the guys jumped in the car and came for a drive with me to identify the noise .
thats the sort of service i expect to be honest ,well happy with it Laughing

they will fit the bearing for 30quid (bearing suppied by me) ,he also will use the old hubnut and the pin .

for the noise coming from the drivers side front wheel ,he reckons something of the pad is rubbing the disc(most probably the pad wear material ) they will sort them all out on monday
