Renault 19 - front wheel bearings(?)

hello

i've got a Renault 19 GTS, H reg (1990?), 5dr (mileage about 120,000) that i'm debating whether to get repaired, or cut my losses and scrap Crying or Very sad

have already spent this year Â£200 for mot and associated work, a battery before that (solved the not starting problem), and 2 weeks after mot a rear shock absorber popped up into the boot - another Â£50! (quoted Â£200 by garage but got set of new shocks - renault - on ebay for Â£15 inc delivery, and got them fitted for Â£35! Razz

) but now this Sad

took it to local garage today to get them to check out a 'humming' vibration that has steadily increased over the last month. (barely noticeable 2 weeks ago - and intermittent, wondered if i was imagining it Confused

) not really noticeable till it gets to 20 mph (and above). still noticeable even when going downhill, and even if i depress clutch at same time.

not a knocking sound, but feels like there's a hoover attached to the steering wheel (can also hear it but hard to describe the sound), and feels as if it's not coming from the engine but low down at the front. so can feel it through the body of the car, but not as noticeable as through steering wheel.

anyway garage have quoted Â£180 + vat for front wheel bearings and fitting. (does this sound like a decent price? oh, i'm in london but couldnae bring maself tae use that other flag - sorry Wink

) looks like you can get bearings for around Â£40(?) - but don't know if i'm looking at the right ones - are mine 'sealed'?? read on other posts about just getting garage to do the 20 ton press bit and fixing it yourself (with boyfriends assistance ie i would hand him the tools Wink

)

the garage also said that it may be the differential? (part of the gear box?) which woud be expensive to repair (like the price of the bearings isn't???) but that they can't really tell until the bearings are done. Confused

any advice greatly appreciated Smile

ie get rid of it? any idea how much i'd get to scrap it? is it safe to drive? )

probly be one of the front wheel barings unless you rag the tottal shit out the car and in london i doubt that

dont bother with a garage just get some barings pressed in and get your bloke to sort it out

then sell it make some money thn buy a 19 16v Razz

most likely a wheel bearing.

Does th enoise change depending on what direction you steer?

no it doesn't. I had a garage do one on my clio and they charged â‚¬30(I supplied the bearing). Bearing from GSF was about â‚¬20 I think.

and forgot what my password was, so couldnae reply sooner)

ok, have been paying lots of attention to what I've decided to call a 'whirring' noise. definitely no difference when I come out of gear. (does this mean it's not the differential?)

chris - yes, it gets worse when i steer left, and is virtually silent when i steer right. so does this mean it's the just the left wheel bearings? (are bearings one of these things that need done in pairs?

cheapest price i've been given so far to fit - is Â£50 (per wheel). (boyfriend thinks it's a job best left to the experts Confused

me - i'm trying to get on a car maintenance evening class so i can do more myself Embarassed

last question - is it safe to drive till i get it fixed (hopefully beg next wk). i'm only driving about 3 miles a day to work and back, but read somewhere that the wheel could fall if if the bearings 'go'??? Shocked

is this true? and what happens when bearings go? (where do they 'go'? Wink

) is it going to damage something else if they go?

it'll be fine to drive about for a while.

if its quiet turning right then the right bearing is the dodgy one.
