Hi

I have a 1998 s reg Renault Laguna 2.0 16v Tourer. Its got 11500 on the clock.

Benn well maintained had an oil change at 114000 as well as filter.

Since then its been losing oil at the rate of 2 pints per 100 miles. No sign of leaking no blue smoke oil sump nut is tight no drips, no drips after been stood still????

TOTALLY CONFUSED

well its not being stolen, its either leaking or being burnt

2 pints per 100 miles you would have a blue smoke screen behind you everywhere.

its leaking somehwere.

I cant see any drips.

This one has an plastic engine screen underneath so any leaks would gather up in this try before hitting fround. NOTHING!

Nor blue smoke! Im still dumb LOL

its going somewhere mate, that s a lot of oil to just dissapear, ambers megane uses maybe a pint per 1 k and theres a constant smoke screen from the car and the front of the blocks wet.

engines dry as a bone, Trays dry, oils ump nut is tight, no blue smoke, running freat, no dips just losing oil.

I know this is frustrating to explain but theres no leak, if there was a leak under compression then wouldnt it still carry on at stand still when idiling or for a short period when the engine has turned off??? NOTHING

Nope, Ive checked everyhting.

My wifes grandad said maybe the previous owners had shoved a heavier grade oil in it to hid the burn off and thats why its still burning but you cant see it????

have you ever watched the iraqi oil fields on the telly? Thats what oil goes like, a litre per 100 miles is a hell of a lot of oil and its going somehwere, if it was burnt off you would see it out the back.

Its not like petrol where 95% of what you get is water thus can't see it!

My first thought would be to drop the engine under tray as these usually hold anything that is leaking on the Goonas but from the volumes you're claiming to be loosing it would be flowing off of it for sure.

I'd be tempted to break the exhaust downpipe section myself and get my finger in there to have a feel as Chris has already pointed out that's a serious oil loss and if you're not dropping it or burning it it's either coming out of the exhaust or you're running oil as coolant! It's really that simple as it doesn't just disappear.

Are we any closer to solving the mystery of the transmogrifying oil?

well I can assure you mate you have a problem like you i have a 2l 16v rxe estate. i do approx 120miles a day and between services I only need to put .5l in just to top her up mine is just natural loss. I suggest you get her up on ramps and take a good look around because that much oil is going somewhere. have you checked the filler cap for mayo? what colour is the coolant? whats the performance like is it sluggish? does it run hot?

I AM SUCH A DIV!!!!

In a moment of madness not only on my part we have found out that.

1. the wrong guage is being read as the oil gauge is electronic.

2. Even so, id only backed up my thinking becuase the dip stick read no oil as well???
