these engines rev real well. from my experience it all kicks of at 4k, then revs hard to the limiter. i wudnt wanna take it past 7k rpm tbh, unless its all done proper. tho theres been plenty of williams and 172 lumps that have revved to 8k fine...

peak power is made at 6200rpm on the megane, but for best progress ive found full throttle upshifts to be the best method, mwhahahaha!!

theres also been plenty of willy cranks that have let go around 7krpm...

the 172 is a better crank.

aye, need to remember the willy crank is a diesel crank, with revs they tend to split, they don't throw rods out the block the crank just splits.

They can handle power and torque fine just not revs they whip abotu to much.

Rods are generally ok to 8 ish.

The megane and 172 etc cranks are totally different to the williams and are fine.

if it produces max bhp at 6.2k why take it to 7? could of saved ya self the trouble of what happend :-/

it wasnt the engines inability to take the revs, it was probably me overtightening the camshaft pulley bolt a few weeks ago. the engines solid to 7k time after time. thats wat it was built for.

ok, well the engines all back together and running now. i think ive found the explanation to what caused it to happen. the week before the big bang i swapped the oil for some 5w30 stuff. the engine hasnt run it before so i gev it a go, was cheap anyways. engine ran sweet as a nut, but the oil pressure was lower than normal. friday night i gave it plenty of beans over a good few miles, which wudv increased the oil temp alot, meaning an even thinner oil coverage. the lack of oil pressure/film caused the camshaft end float thingy to lock in its journal, and break half of it off, which then jammed the camshaft, stopping it from spinning. the force of the cambelt at 7k rpm kept the pulley turning, which in turn sheared the bolt off, and then buggered the exhasut valves. the cma pulley stayed on the shaft, which kept the engine in time, bar the zorst valves, so thats why theres minimal damage to the rest of the valves.

gunna be taking it easy for a few days, gunna stick some proper oil tomoz and get some new coolant in it.

BTW, on the subject of oil, which does everyone else use?

I use 'Synta' semi synthetic stuff from the VW-audi factors, seems good, and well priced.

JB, I know you use this stuff too, I saw a bottle in one of your pics.

dont even know whats in mine..

WD40 for all i know :p

but it seems fresh on the dipstick, so will keep it in for a while.
