Sheared wheel nut!

OOPS

Managed to shear a wheel nut whilechanging the front discs today. Haven't got the tools to sort it out myself so I need to get the car down to a garage. Is it safe to drive with only 3 nuts on the wheel?

I guess I should just take it easy, but am i gona loose the wheel on the way there?

happened to me ,you can drive with 3 nuts as long as you want ,i did drive for 3 weeks .
they just put new threads into the disc in the garage for 20quid

Nah not having much luck. But I did quite clearly state in my project update that i was lookin forward to driving for a day or two without problems so i feel I brought it upon myself in way. Smile

I keep doing things on the car and realising how badly the easiest of jobs have been done in the past. This car hasn't been looked after very well but the bodywork is rust free so thats a bonus.

havent u got a drill? have a go yourself...just dril it out...just be careful not to damage the thread in the hub

As chris H pointed out in one of my threads, drilling them out is not easy.

I had two of them shear off on the same hub, i got one of them out by removing the brake disc, banging it a few times with a hammer, and then got it out with a pair of mole grips.

the other one is now out too, by applying loads of heat to it with a heatgun at work, it was glowing red then again a pair of mole grips on it and unscrewed it.

The thread came straight out with just finger power in the end so not that bad.

However managed to do the same to another bolt on the same wheel with no effort at all. Either I'm superman and I don't know it or my wheel bolts are shagged. Decided not to take the chance cos i really don't fancy loosing a wheel at 80 anytime soon so I've got a whole new set and some locking nuts too. Prob a bit ott but I really didn't want to take chances with this.

the wheel bolts on the alloys are very crap and all shear, even on new cars!

ive drilled a few out no problems...just need to make sure u got good drill bits (ie not feckin woodwork ones Wink

) and a steady enough hand to keep it central...

oh and a plug in drill makes it a lot easier than any battery effort

locking nuts are piss easy to drill, takes a few seconds.

the renaulkts ones even after 10 mins I can't make a dent in them with decent bits and a 500Watt drill.

Has anyone else got the official Renault â€˜paddy mcgardâ€™ style locking bolts? I got a set brand new in the little Renault Boutique case off ebay about 18 months ago for Â£3.99 Smile

nope. I keep meanign to get a set or 2 though, I'm gonna look on e-bay now.
