hi, has anyone got the specs of the renault 5 turbo engine? the crossflow head one (pre 1986 i believe) plus originally the engine in the 5 was mounted north south, if so what gearbox did it use? and if possible what size is it?

many thanks

Thats great, does anyone know what size the combined engine and tranaxle unit is? is it a four speed or a five speed? what sort of ratios does the transaxle have? are there any pictures of the engine out of the car? does anyone know where i could get a engine and gearbox transaxle from? i guess a donor car would be ideal. is there a good place to look for early turbo cars?

1.4 ohv engine engine type c6j-7-26 you'd be very lucky to find one of these on e-bay or at a breakers. try the renault owners club, www.renospeed.co.uk or renault turbo spares blackburn lancs.

I think the transaxel type is ng5 if it is the ratio's are 1 3.82:1
2 2.18:1
3 1.41:1
4 1.03:1
5 0.86:1
reverse 3.08:1
final dr 3.78:1
hope this helps Haynes manuels don't give the physical engine sizes.

well i am not sure i should say this, but i don't own a renault. i own a saab 96. I orginally joined here to ask about a turbocharger i aquired that came off a renault as i wanted to fit it to the V4 engine in my saab. the saab's gearbox is pretty weak however so it would probally break very quickly so when i saw an article in retro cars showing how to get over 200bhp from a renault 5 turbo engine and as the early ones have the same layout as mine, a engine north south with a transaxle gearbox driving the front wheels i am thinking of fitting this to my saab as it will be stronger and probally lighter too and if it has 5 gears an real improvement in motorway driving. however to test the viability i need to know weather it will fit, thus i need the dimensions and ideally the weight. i am reansonably confident it will fit, the main prob will the gearchange as the saab has a steering column gear change and i would like to keep this. anyway that is my main objective, does it sound do-able and something worthwhile? i would value peoples opinons.

many thanks

well that will be the main problem, i can probally mount the renault engine to the saab gearbox, u can get adapter plates or make ur own bellhousing, it has been done. but i would rather have 5 gears and ratios meant for that engine. but the linkage will be the main problem how are the gears changed on these boxes? that is the crucial thing to sort out. also how is the clutch atcuated? hydralic or cable?

why bother? Fit a B202 and be done with it.

The GTT engine is pretty poor.

or get the 2 stroke with the freewheel on it!

well the english v4's in transits etc are really crap, but luckily saab used the ford tanus german version of the v4 which is much better! however it is still pretty rubbish! although ford apparently use the v4 as an stand alone industrial engine! anyways i digress. I like this forum even though i own a saab, our own forum that i use is much smaller than this one! so what would the people on this forum recomend i do with the engine bay of my saab? are there any fairly short engines that may fit in?

stick a bike engine in it.

the 96 is a small car by saab standards, even the alfa V4.

did alpha do a v4? all i know about are the flat 4's which i believe have been tried but are to wide to fit in the engine bay unless u do some metalwork! the bike engine is a good idea and i really wouldn't mind doing that but it would cost far too much! a decent engine is at least 2k with a special diff costing about that again. and then there is all the work and money to get it in! i don't have that kinda money unfortunalty. cause a bike engine would be fantastic!
