well this afternoon as i was changing the gearbox oil on my phase 2, this bloke starts talking to me, asks me if i want to sell it, i told him no cos i had only recently bought it and wanted to keep it.
He then spotted my white phase 1/2 hybrid sitting behind it and asked me if i knew who owned it.
told him i did and again he asked if i wanted to sell it.

sadly i knew this day would have to come, i can't afford to keep both of them road legal and having no where to store the phase 1, i knew sooner or later, one of the 2 would have to go.

I told him the phase 1 had a hot start problem and that it was prolly the CTS needed replacing, he offered me £400 for it.
I was like hmmmmm that's more than i paid for it and it has not cost me that much to sort so i would break about even with it.
so i sold it.

i am sad to see it go, but having to be practical, it's gone and now i have £400 to spend on the phase 2 Smile

And it's back again!

it popped the diff circlip again after new owner gave it a thrashing.

he put 50 miles on the clock since i sold it, so bought it back off him for £200.

I could have been nasty and told the guy to F off, sold as seen and all that but knowing what the problem was with the car and feeling a little guilty knowing that once the circlip goes, it has a higer percentage of happening again i took it back.

gonna drop another box into it and whilst at it change the clutch, so if anyone has a cheap JB3 going, let me know.

i also removed the black chequers from the back end this morning, took ages to clean up the sticky mess left on the paint work, looks nicer now.

Also the weird thing is, without them the car looks longer, and with the phase 2 parked behind it, it looks to be about a foot longer than the phase 2, of course it's not but funny how a different colour can make a car look so different.

yep.

but the funniest thing about it all is that since getting it back yesterday i've had 3 other ppl approch me wanting to buy it.

One guy even offered to buy the box and clutch and pay me to change them out. (friend from work who knows the history of this car)

i did not want to sell it in the first place, it's only cos i cant afford to keep them both insured that i sold the phase 1 in the first place.

i am going to be looking at maybe getting a limited mileage policy on the phase 1 to get the insurance down on it so i can keep it. lol

so whats the solution ? it's not gonna be any good if it keeps popping the diff circlip every 50 miles.

Well its the washer that goes of course and makes the circlip pop out, and there has to be some sort of fault that makes this occur, worn sunwheel perhaps?

the problem is the sun wheel flys out grabs the thrust washer which twists and grips the circlip and pops it.

Some are ok others pop all the time, tolereance difference it may be.

Its not helped by old crappy box oil, after all this shouldn't be allowing it to grab it.

Its a crap design, although the 1.4's etc use the same principle and same bits but they don't pop them. I have tried even with 18's and sticky tyres they don't pop. You don;t even need to reag a 16V to get it to pop.

glad u mentioned the oil there in ur post Chris, something i did not realise.
it's meant to have a film of oil between the thrust washer and the sunwheel then?
hmmmm, the box on the car has a very slight leak and i mean slight, not dripping but if u clean it, after a week there is a film of oil under the box, funnily enough right under the diff under where u put the diff circlip in.

So in my case it could be popping because there is not enough oil between the washer and the sunwheel ?

righty the boxes all leak oil, the leaks should be from the selector rod under the box and from the passenger side drivshaft where the gaiter meets the shaft. If theres no oil there then the level is to low.

The diff housing should be immersed in oil to just above where the sunwheel lies.
