Ok people, after singing the praises of my new R19, things took a major turn for the worst tonite!!!

After a perfect 120mile drive home on wednesday, today i left home to travel the 20 miles to my girlfriends brother's for a BBQ.

Things started of fine, until all of a sudden, as i was traveling about 70 down the A2, i lost all power. A managed to get over to the hard shoulder, to see a cloud of smoke raise from my bonnet.

It smelt like electrical burning, so i guessed something may of shorted. After waiting 15mins(yes only 15mins) for the RAC, he confirmed what i had thought.

He believes my starter motor is knacked, he reckons it had engaged but didnt disingage therefore overheating and shorting out the wire between its self the started motor and the solenoid. Does that sound rite/possible??

So it looks like im going have to get hold of and fit a new starter after only 3 days of ownership!

How hard is it to remove and fit a new starter, and is their anyone near dartford(kent) who has one going cheap?

Complimentary breakdown truck tows come free of charge with valver ownership, didn't you know?

I've had at least one AA encounter with every valver I've owned!

I would check the loom / fuses also check it hasn't done other damage that would have caused you to loose power.

disconnect the battery, remove the starter motor heatsheild and check that the live from the battery to starter is not touching the exhaust manifold.

to remove the starter you first need to take off the Y shaped bracket that bolts onto the block and the starter motor

Thanks for all the advice lads, all sorted now.

Was the starter, the wired between the motor and the solenoid was completely fried!!

Complete pain in the arse removing it, but the new one just slotted rite in.

it's better, i've been having an odd problem with it
when the car is cold, gearchange is normal but when the engine is hot, gearchange is very stiff, so stiff that at times 1st and reverse can not be engaged.
I had it before when the clutch cable was knackered but its got a new one on it now.
I've adjusted the cable and took it for a spin this afternoon and gearchange appears to be normal again so i hope i've cured it
