Sound Proofing

This is quite possibly the daftest question EVER to be on this site, but I was just wondering if there was such a thing as like a sound proofing material that you could buy to put on the underside of the bonnet or somewhere just to quieten the sound of the engine a bit? I'm only askin cuz my boss was lookin at his audi at work, and it was lush, just sat there hummin away, and he opened the bonnet and whoa.....sounded like a bag of nails lol. Shut the bonnet again and "hmmmmmmmmmmm" just sat there purrin away again.......magic! So I was like "hmm....I wanna do that!" But what the hell could u put there that wouldn't catch fire with the heat from that damn engine lol. doh

But seriously, my old XR2i used to have this black carpet like material under the bonnet, I dont think you can get it for the 19's though. Chris?

Haha yeah, egg boxes are good! Don't think I'll go with that idea tho lol. Am just waiting for someone to tell me to wear ear muffs.

I spoze if u could buy that carpet stuff and then cut it to shape? But hell knows how u stick it to the underside of bonnet Confused

Right, go to the scrap yard, find a diesel/turbo diesel and open the bonnet, you shall then find the exact soundproofing you are looking for.

hmm.......I dunno actually lol. Thought it would maybe sound smoother with more exhaust sound than engine. I dunno. My fuel pump doesn't help either. When I'm sat there idling, all I can hear is "buuuuuuzzzzzzzzzz" I'm sure it's fucked. Or nearly fucked. I just want it to sound.....'nice'

I kinda like the fuel pump noise, sounds sort of 'furtureistic'

yes they do apparently ,i thought something was wrong when i heard the fuel pump going on constantly .

i also found out my aux water pump is working as well.

engine and the exhaust sounds great ,i would not soundproof them if i was you .

marks 1.8 RT also has the standard underbonnet sound deadening.

But my fuel pump was always silent.....and then not long after I had the car I noticed a slight leak in the fuel tank (towards top of tank, so only noticed it when I filled it right up) but anyway, had it in garage for new fuel tank and pump's been noisey ever since then. So I assumed garage had fucked it up or done something to it? No idea

Neither can I JB, only when standing round the back of the car. Does the sound deadening make much difference on the 1.8's? My current bonnet doesnt have any and I certainly noticaed a difference on my TD.

When i worked for Parco Autostores years ago they used to sell sound deadning pads, but i think they are a little bit heavy and may add unwanted weight to the car Confused

Yeah - mines got underbonnet sound proofing - it's held on by plastic clip thingys that clip into holes in the bonnet.

Have a look in the scrappys I think the turbo diesels all have them to quieten the diesel sound - you'd probable need to cut a hole in it for the valver vent though.

on a valver its gonna make it super hot under there as well.
