 squeeky noise

i had this problem for a while now ,it happens when i am taking turns(left and right) ,the noise comes from drivers front wheel .
tried to trace it today ,jacked the drivers wheel up removed it and turned the disc by hand , the only suspicious thing i have seen is the brake pad rubbing the disc while i am turning the disc .there is absolutely no gap between the 2,is this meant to be like that ???

without removing the passenger side wheel i can see that the pad has a gap between the disc , so does this explain the squueky noise while taking turns or am i just wrong as normal ?

the pad is supposed to be in light contact with the disc at all times.

are you sure the pads not down to the metal? Also pop the pads out and make sure theres nothign in the pad, I have seen it all, screws and nuts that were embedded int he pad when they were made etc!

this all makes better sense now, i in fact had a problem with the drivers side brakes since i bought the car . i noticed a few times that the pad on that side locks on to the disc months ago and i had that smell of brake inside the cabin . but the pads have been renewed 6 months ago after the mot test .

i will indeed take the pads out and check the condition chris


now a weird thing here :
i have been telling about the smell in the cabin,now and again when i put my foot down i still have that smell in the cabin but never had the clutch changed at all and i have no problems with changing gears etc . i believe brake pads may cause the same sort of smell and will cause slow acceleration when i put my foot down as a ferked clutch would . am i right ???? ferked clutch will cause slipping thus the smell, if it doesn;t slip no smell.

if the brakes sliders etc are siezed you get the smell and the lack of go. Also after driving a few miles the sticky brake wheel will be hotter than the other wheels.

i noticed that once before the pad change after going down hill i had the smell 3mins later i was home and parked the car and touched the drivers side disc through the wheels ,ended up with 1st degree burn on the finger Mad

Did you touch the other wheel disc too?? because if it were just as hot then you prob wouldn't be right Wink And that was just down to your driving Razz

if you touch a brake disc right after driving the car, faulty brakes or not, you deserve to get burned... Razz

yes did touch the other one and was not as hot

took both front wheels out one at a time to be able to turn them by hand and listen/check for differences .

i took this picture from drivers side driveshaft ,is that rusty bit supposed to be covered by the gaiter ?

while turning the discs by hand ,i noticed a bit of free play on both driveshafts ,the long metal bar bit makes a elipse shape rather than a smooth circle ,anything dodgy here ???

noticed this as well on passenger side ,does this gaiter need a cable tie ?????

also both brake pads look quite thick ,so back to square 1
drivers front wheel still squeeks while turning ,is it a drive shaft ????

righty yes pop a cable tie on the rack gaiter. TBH it needs changed but a cable tie will extend its life for a while.

the CV gaiter should be on the splined section of the shaft but as long as its not leakign I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

did you take the pads out?

both drive shaft gaiters looked fine and had cable ties on them .
what about the eclipse movement of the driveshafts ?? is that normal ????


no did not take the pads out ,to be honest i was not sure what bolts to take out in order to remove the brake pad and did not want to go any further as i got work in a few hours .

yes thats normal, the elipse movement is there becuase of the angle of the shafts, when the cars on its wheels it spins normally. Its due to it beign a tripod joint.

1 13mm bolt then you can flip the caliper forward and take the pads out. 30 second job!
