For as long as I can remember I've always had to tap my foot on the throttle to get my car to start and thought that lately it was turning over slower than normal before starting and put it down to a low battery especially this morning when I had to get my jump pack out Evil or Very Mad . I left the car parked up at my dads for the day and this afternoon went to start it up and nothing, dash lights came on and there was a noise from the relay box but that was it even with the jump pack attached, luckily my brothers gave me a jump start for me to get home and I haven't tried starting it since. Another bit of luck for me is I have the donor car arriving tomorrow which should help unless it looks too good to scrap then I have a dilemma.
So I'm guessing its the starter motor but its so busy under the bonnet I can't see where it is, is it going to be a pig of a job? I have a haynes manual but obviously would prefer the opinion of someone that knows what they are talking about as opposed to having a go and its nothing like in the pics Rolling Eyes .
TIA
Bev.

Its not the easiest of jobs,(ask touring, its taken him nearly a month, and he still hasnt done it!) some can almost fall off, or be really awkward.

Its down beside the downpipe on the back of the engine. it should have a heatshield on it, you have to remove all the brackets etc before its coming off!

bev as long as u got a angle grinder to hand your going to have a arse of a job on ye hands, first of all have a feel under the manifold and see if you can feel a flat metal strip going from the bottom of the manifold going down, if thats not there then lucky you the starter will just fall out after you undo the bolts which are holing it in, if that strip is there make sure your patient unlike me im not and as dn said it took me a mth to do this job and finially gt it done

yea, the one that holds the metal bracket to the block and the manifold. The starter wouldn't come out because it was in the way.

So how long did it take to remove? would it be better for me to just buy a second hand one at a reasonable price than remove one from the donor car? (is £23 inc postage good?)

don't think it was the earth as when I used my jump pack I connected the earth cable to the engine not the battery or is there a seperate earth for the starter in its own right? also will the starter from the TD fit the 16v?

yes the td starter will fit the 16V.

And the way you connected it says its an earth problem more than it doesn't!

Sort the earths out and it will stop flattening the battery as well.

not sure to be honest, it normally turns over slowly as if the battery is low but just been out and tried to start it and it doesn't even try Rolling Eyes but the lights come on inc the stereo so the battery can't be that low.
