my steering is an ongoing shite that never ends...

i still have wandering steering. i have changed:-
wheel bearings,
track rod ends
struts
top mount bearings
lower balljoints

and it still wanders...also another quite possibly important symptom is .....first thing in the morn, after the car has been sat still all night, the very first time i turn the wheel it cracks...like being sat still all night has made it "set" in position and the first turn breaks a seal...and then it is fine...apart from the drunkun wandering when moving...

i have a inner ball joint awaiting replacement but cant get the fecker out...so i am guessing that may be contributing as i have changed everything else...

im hopin the racks ok...i noticed u said u could grease it up somehow? how?

also is it worth looking at that looking joint at the bottom of the steering column inside the car to see if it has worn loose and wedge something in that gap..as someone once described on cliosport.

Can't really help you much there but I had steering problems with my hatch... never had it long enough to find out what mind you!

Is your subframe bolted in properly? Stupid question i know but i discovered a missing bolt from mine once and it did the early morning crack too

Thats a point... when did you last get your tracking done? Proberly with lasers etc...

errrm....well its done it for quite a while now...no big deal as it seems to be just once in the morning...but im sure ive had tracking done a couple of times since its been doin it...withlasers too...frickin lasers!

no idea about the subframe tho....guess il have to have a look see if any bolts look unduely loose!

George i told you what was wrong with it.

if the rack cracks when you turn it then its buggered my newish racks doing the same and thankfully I will be using the 16V's rack that doesn't crack.

You can remove the gaiter at the rack side and slap grease on it and work it through.

if th ebottom of the columns gone then you will get a load of play i.e. and inch plus beofre the wheels turn.

rack teeth have worn due to lack of lube. Engage with a crack and can skip occasionally.

the crack is once after a long time sittin like overnight...only once when i first turn...rest of day no cracking, no creaking....

wandering defined...imaging driving along and theres a long slight rut in thr road like from a road works...it feels like the wheel is being guided by the rut and gets taken out of the direction it was goin in without my control. have to keep adjustin it to stay straight..not extremely just noticably...annoying i should say. doesnt feel too confident shootin between small gaps at speed ie parked cars and buses!

Mines a bit twitchy, but I thought that was because of lowering it and 17" alloys. Smile Mind you it doesnt crack in the morning

sounds like standard tramlining they all do that.

On the inside lane of a motorway thats quite old you get the troughs made by the lorries. Drive near it the car will get pulled into it and go almost like its on rails.

Your probably just being a fairy.

lol thats just how it is...but all i can say is that it hasnt always been that way...i dont think it is just standard...its just a bit too unstable...im not crashing or anything, but u know how it is, just nice to get things perfect

starting to think this may be the prob....went under the car and tried to tighten them and they could move relatively easy...i assume they should be solid...

but as i was tightenin i had this nasty feelin the thread was strippin. is this likely to happen?

should i jack the engine up and tighten when the weight is off the bolts?

the metal cage over the nuts on the rear bolts will have broken, they always do. You need to jam in an 18mm spanner to stop em turning.

the front 16mm bolts are into captive nuts, if they have broken away get em welded or hold them with a spanner, I would re-weld them.

agreed.
if the teeth have worn this could cause wondering due to play i.e. the teeth arnt meshing solidly

yeah chris...one of them is just turning....so i think the nut is just turning...will have another go at it...but i was surprised they were loose!!

also think the lower bushes are shot too adding to things...like banging on bumps.

also the frt passenger subframe bolt seems to be behind another metal plate??

only one bush on the subframe. Banging will be from the arb bushes.

Dunno what you mean about the passenger bolt. Its the same as on the drivers side unless its been welded badly or something.
