 steering me up the wall

took 19 to be tracked up bloke says steering rack knackered car just gone through mot, no mention of this. he gets hold of p/s wheel and like pulls it towards him and pushes it back.has had a s/h hub on this side . wants 60 squid to fit it rung up gsf told part obsolete for manual rack.only p/s available .how do i check for steering rack wear.how much do ren want?it steer fine turns stright away wheels when s/wheel turned have noticed since it had this hub on going over rough surfaces a lot of sideways movement felt on the offending side. did make a loud clonk on that side before hub was changed when s /wheel moved to left.now no clonks or owt. was told by garage that wheel was about to come off before it was changed any ideas advise?

I got a new manual rack for 45 quid from the factors. GSF tend to be idiots.

Why not replace the worn bit, if its only 1 side then its either the track rod end or the inner balljoint.

not hard to do and cheaper than a rack.

thanks for advise.its booked in now for new complete rack plus fitting and fully tracked up cost 150pound all in.so for its cost 300pound plus but have looked at other cars for thids amount and dont like what i see.its also had new discs pads handbrake s/h hub and been quoted 50 pound for rear silencer fitted is this faier?ive got to admit though its a gorgeous motor classic lines with period alloys and top extras.citroens off a family member but they are big cars and dont like diesiels anyway if u have a white mirror id be interested chris i will send a donation vaia paypal but at moment had no cash and none on horizon hurry up giro .

50 quid for a new back box and fitting is quite reasonable.

Cheaper to DIY bit its messy!

I only have them (mirrors) in plain black mate.
