having just changed the head gasket / water pump / timing belt, everything is running well apart from a noise that is audible above about 2k RPM. at first I thought it was a disconnected vacuum hose as it sounded like air escaping somewhere (quite high pitched), although I have checked everything and it's all plumbed in right. It's pitch doesn't change with engine speed, apart from to become audible over about 2000 RPM. It sounds like it is coming from the right-hand side of the engine bay (as viewed from driver's seat), and i think it may be coming from a rectangular shaped box that sits on a mount at the edge of the inlet manifold (on a 1.4 clio 95). It has a 2 wire connector and 2 breather / vacuum pipes connected. One goes to a T junction at the back of the manifold, and the other goes right to the front of the car, under the headlight, and then disappears. I looked for this in Haynes, but magically I couldn't find it.

Any ideas what this is, and if it might cause problems?

Drivability doesn't seem to be affected by it, although I do feel a bit daft driving around with a whistling sound coming from under the bonnet Smile

maybe its too loose then.

Ots an arse to get right. It shouldn;t whine and it shouldn;t flap.

It should make a very soft gentle whacking noise as the teeth mesh!

Like I said leave it a few days

the thing you described will more than likely be the carbon casiters solenoid valve.

it's deffo not too loose as I was consious of the consequences, must still have done it too tight.

BTW just read the fuel injection guide...fantastic!

well the fault finding efi guide is currently being written but it is very very long, hopefully all the bases will be covered by it though.
