Got back in my car in town, glow plug light comes on, several seconds later goes off. turn key....engine turning, but not firing. After several attempts of doing this, me dad gets in the car to move it off the starter and for some reason it starts.

I've manage to narrow it down to this. The car will not start off the key with the car in neutral. It will however start if you put it in 1st, turn the key and when the car starts to move off the starter put foot on clutch. Car starts.

Seems like a bit of an odd one to me, can't think why it would do it!

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

Could it be the fuel stop solenoid? I've got a TD and mine went on me last year outside my mates house, the AA wanted £50 to fix it. Managed to get it to the motorfactors and cost me £12.50.

I'd go for stop solenoid too, after I broke mine (overtightned it) it wanted to start but wouldn't! You can take the plunger and spring out, tape up the wire so it doesn't earth itself (don't re-attach it) and that will let you start the car it just won't switch off with the key then you have to stall it or use the manual stop thingy on the fuel pump!

Glad to see it's only £12 I was going to get one from the scrappers!

I would also look at the ignition barrel.

Try waggling the key whilst cranking.

probably the box, but it could be the bearing.

On th ewhite valver it rattles liek a mofo, dip the clutch the knackered box is silent.

Rev the engine about 4krpm and the release bearing howls

Had the same problem few months ago with my car whirring/wining noise, my release bearing had gone. It didn't rattle so could be something worse in this case
