 TD cold start 'chugging'

Had this problem since i've had the car and even though i've changed engine i've still got the problem, what it is; when I start the car from cold (ie, in the morning, doesn't do it so much when engines warm) it idles around 400-500rpm and is chugging on the verge of a stall while at the same time chucking out lots of smoke. If you rev the car up to 2000rpm and then back off it will then idle at 900rpm as normal.

Any ideas for this? The only thing that I can thing of are the glowplug/preheat system relay/control box and the fast idle actuator which are the only things which I can think were not replaced which the engine swap.

id like to add to this....i have a mate with a mondeo 1.8 td who also has chugging issue when cold...and for first 5 mins or so of driving can get puffs of white/grey/blue smoke now and again...goes once warm.

(not tryin to hijack post, just sounds like same problem)

Mines not quite the same becuase as soon as you rev the car slightly ie 2000rpm the problem dissapears, although is does piss smoke for the next 2mins if you rev it above 2000rpm

a m8 of mine has just bought an ex-AA van....u know with all the workshop/tool storage space at the back (its our new team machine!). its a Vauxhall Brava 2.5 TD, and it does this!
i think its just an inherent problem of "old-generation" diesels....cold start

Revving it will clear it cos the soot will be cleared.

I'd change the glow plugs, use NGK's as they seem to be the ones that last.

Test the relay and check for power to each fglow plug as well.

It may be the cold start compensator but these tend to be reliable plus when you rev it the problems clears.

Glow plugs have been changed, engine is only on 60-70odd K, also did this with my last engine. My dads 19 which is just over 100K doesnt do it or my m8's which was on 196k.

well change everything for new and it'll go away
