 Timing Belt!!! (As part of Head Gasket change)

Right, I've been taking bits off the car for nearly 5 hours and have got to the stage of taking the timing belt off, this is where I've got really nervous!!! Do I really need to take the cambelt off first? Do I have to take the timing belt right off or can I just "slip" it off the cog thats attatched to the head?

Please...help me Shocked I'm having a nervous breakdown here!!!!

Oh yeah, also, the head bolts came off spectacularly easily, could this mean I just need to tighten the bolts rather than change the gasket???

lock the timing pump in place, and your going to need a new belt anyway so it has to come off, i dont know about the bolts now you have un torqued them, so it will have un settled the head.

Why do I need to change the timing belt??? The head is still rock solid.

I'm really confused when I look in Dialogys it tells me there is just one belt, when I read Haynes it tells me I have to take off the Cambelt before I take off the Timing belt...am I going mad???

The timing belt IS the cam belt, you might be referring to the aux/fan belt which drives the alt/water/pas pumps on these engines?

You've slackened the bolts off, the head might not have visably moved, but i'd take the head off and have a look anyway.

I was referring to the Aux drive belt....heads spinning! Got a rotten cold which isn't helping matters!!!

as the cambelt has already been tensioned, so if you want it to snap and bend valvs, put the old one on, but its a known rule after a belt has been tensioned its will have stretched, put it back on it will fail very quickly.

Aaaaargh!!!! I've removed everything it tells me to in Haynes with the exception of one bolt which the head has rounded on (it's on the rear timing cover)! Don't know what to do now. The head is not shifting at the timing belt end!

As for changing the belt, if I can scrape together the cash and source one I will replace it although it does say in Haynes that you can reuse it as long as it is not very worn.

if its been on for more than 10 hrs running time, i wouldnt risk it personally, because, if it snaps, its all gotta come off again, and that means new head gasket, valves, and in my case con rod. its not worth the risk of it going again, as you'll have to do it all again. its upto you, but i wouldnt.

is this a new slow go record? 5 hrs and only about to get the belt off!

Anyway belt off.

The reason the heads stuck is cos the cambelt cover is still botled to the block. To get round this ( I had to on thelaguna cos the cam pulley wouldn't come off) undo the idler puller and tensioner, you can then lift it up and off.
