As you might have seen me saying in other threads I have been trying to lower the torsion bar on my Clio today. I was following THIS guide to do it.

I started on the torsion bar that looked worst of the two and it started coming out fine but now it's stuck here:

[img:800:600:39a5fb2d3c]http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y293/donsrno1/PDR_0114.jpg[/img:39a5fb2d3c]

It won't come out any further and has already fucked two M10 screws and bolts (stripped the thread) trying to do it. Anyone got any advice on getting it out the rest of the way?

Thanks.

Also, I tried to knock the bar back in when I couldn't get it out any further but the wee bugger doesn't want to go back in either.

Is it an enclosed or open torsion bar?

Odd then, especially as its started moving.

You've not got far to go until it comes out...try jacking the hub up to release some more pressure off it and retry?

kl, will try that mate. Should I just jack it up a tiny amount?

Will have to go to B+Q anyway to get more screws.

Aye just a tiny bit...literally a few mm...enough so that the splines don't have the full weight of the rear axle weighing down on them.

OK. UI've just had a look at the bar on the other side again and it looks as though it has moved IN the way by a few mm - is there any way that should happen?

The reason I can see it's moved is that there is a wee ring of rust inside showing where it was before and it's about 3mm back from that now. I'm 90% sure that it was in line with this ring of rust before but don't know why it should do that?

Not to my knowledge...the ones on my 1.2 weren't connected in any way and i'm not aware that they should be?

that's the strange thing as the one I was taking out has moved over 1cm but the one on the other side had moved a few mm I think, it could just be my imagination I suppose but it definately looks like the mark of where it was before and it's a few mm behind it now.

lol, I'm a right plank. It turns out the socket was just too small. I had ruled that out before because I hadn't paid any attention to the fact the torsion bar was slightly tapered at the end so I though it was fitting OK in the socket.

jack9gnt eh hub up and trying will just end in tears, you are then puttign pressure ont eh bar.

I always undo the lower shock bolts and normally the bars pull in and out by hand

yeah, I found that after the bar had been out once I was able to pull it out by hand the next time. It was actually a really easy job after I realised it was the wrong socket - just a bit of messing about till I got used to taking the bar in and out till I got te height I wanted.

Now the front tomorrow - god knows what I'll manage to do there Wink
