Car has been making a bit of a clunking sound in between braking and accelerating. Car is fine at higher speed but it's just when starting and stopping in traffic.
Thought it could be CV joints, lower ball joints, wishbone bushes.

But, after inspection today it's coming from the diff housing, and i have noticed i can pull the offside driveshaft in and out of the housing a good 4mm.
With both wheels off the ground and the car in first gear, i can rock the wheels back and forth quite a bit and it makes quite a nasty crunch/clunk noise.

Is this new box time or does it sound like a replaceable part has failed?

Can't the diff be replaced on it's own?

errrr, just had a look, it's got some of it in, looks like its had the end's drilled off to get the shaft off.

I tried to see if the end of the shaft is sliding about but it seems quite secure.

Could this be the cause of the problem?

Yea, i did check that and the shaft is seems to be stuck fast.

All the play is where the spindle enters the diff housing, and when you rotate the wheel with it in gear there seems to be far too much play and noise coming from the diff.

Should the nearside driveshaft have any sort of movement to and from the box in it? Just wondering because I think mine could be moved a bit when I was replacing the hub on my car.

I have been told that the problem with my diff could be the bearings, which can be replced in the car.

Is this likely, or should i just go with the new box thing.

If i do go for a new box, does it matter which one it is, or will all JB3 boxes fit.
Mine has an ally sump, will a tin sump box fit?

Gonna need some help with this one.
It's now making a nice rattling noise, and clunking worse than ever Confused

This is all too bad timing

how can it be done in the car?

Can they teleport the diff out put the bearings in then teleport it back in?

if so can I have their number please.

any J series box will fit.

Fair enough, didn't think the repairing was a feasible option, sounded all a bit too simple.

Anyway, back to the box fitting.
Don't i remember reading a post on here where someones gearbox didn't fit properly and there was a big gap at the bottom?

Think it was down to the ally / tin sump issue.

Did it turn out it was ok like that?

Right, before i go any further with this, i'm going to fit a new roll pin.

Although i can't move the shaft by hand, when under a load it may move about, so let's make sure.

What size is the roll pin??

Ta!

I think it was more of a case of what was closest to the production line rather than designing.
