The red warning light on my engine temp gauge has came on and wont go off,

the manual says check the belts and make sure there is coolant in the bottle, iv checked these and all is ok,

everything seems to be working as normal, the engine stiil heats up to normal temp and does not over heat,

iv been told that if all is ok then its the sensor itself thats dodgy, is this correct ??

I would say it's just a dodgy sensor mate

AFAIK the light is there just to point out that the temp is V. high (Just incase you didn't notice the gauge was climbing), If the engine is cold and the light is on then it all points to the sensor being FUBAR'ed

its more likely to be the sender if the internals of the sender is like the CTS s ??
there is a white wax around the original sensor inside the metal that has contact with water in the head.
so if the metal bit is corroded to death leaking water inside the sensor , the sensor will be more sensitive to heat hence it will show a few degrees celcius way over due to the metal and wax not shielding the sensor anymore
