well if a tensioner goes then the cambelt will go with it. If its a tensioner. If its one of the aux things liek the alt etc then it may throw the belt and cook the engine as the water pump will stop.

Right, thanks.

one more question for you Chris, lol, on my phase 2, the ignition module buzzs on and off for about 5 minutes after i've stopped the engine.
Any clues ?

Are you sure its the ignition module, or is it the little water pump in front of the gearbox?

If its the pump, then that's normal. Or at least it would have been normal 10 years ago, most have packed up by now.

lol I have never heard of a buzzing ignition module. I have seen a coil buzz for about 2 seconds before it exploded.

It'll be the pump

Hmmm, good thinking batman, the buzzing noise is coming from around the area where the ignition module is, is the 2nd water pump directly under it then?

Are they only on the phase 2's ?

i've had 3 phase 1's and neither of them have had this 2nd pump. this is my first phase 2

nope, the ignition module is on the bulkhead, the water pump is on the subframe, in front of the gearbox, behind the radiator

all 16Vs had the pump fitted. Not all of them work. Its on the front of the car beside the radiator on the passenger side.

ok, so if this pump is not working on my phase 1, it could be the reason why it has a hot start problem . . the plot thickens . . don't you just love old cars . .

cheers guys, your never ending help in all things renault is much appreciated.

no it wouldnt cause a hot start problem. The pump is only meant to run for 8 minutes or so after the engine is switched off, the engine doesnt get a whole lot cooler in that amount of time, pump working or not.

i toyed with the idea yeah. I dont really dislike phase 1s by the way, i have thought of swapping mine for a phase 1. a bit of banter just makes things interesting.

If you tell anyone I admitted that I'll deny everything.

I've been looking at few clios lately, theres a good one round here, it's got a terminator bodykit and lexus lights. The guy said I could have it for £1500, it's got a superchip which adds 25bhp as well... what do you think Neil?

Right, first off sorry for the size of the pics but i thought you would want to see them in as much detail as possible.

It's not looking healthy!

Image

It doesn't even spin, as you can tell by looking at the top of it, the belt is just rubbing over it, looks well shafted, so why the rattle if it's not even moving?
Cambelt looks in need of replacement too

Out of interest, the left hand cam . .

Image

seems out of balance, as the engine is running you can see it move slightly off centre, could this be caused by the seized tensioner ?

Cheers again

Well thats indeed a buggered tensioner.

Are you sure its not just the belt thats makign it seem like its wonky? Its the exhaust cam btw.

But you my good man need a new camblet, tensioner and idler. If the tensioners seized then the rattle may be from the idler. Its another small pulley like the tensioner but towards the front of the car. You can see it in the top pic to the right.
