aye, you can try a motor factors they may have them or can get one. If its made by FAI, gates or powergrip then get it if its cheaper.

chris my wise man can you see the long nut between two pulleys ? remember i found exactly the same bolt attached to my timing belt cover which did not look right to me at all.

The bolt is the wrong one, it looks like a dohc head bolt that allows the cover to be bolted on between the cams! Looks like someone have the cover off and used the wrong bolts to stick it on.

i reckon those ferkin cowboys changing my timing belt stuck any bolt they found around to any hole they can . bastards Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

i still got a weird noise coming around the timing belt or aux drive belt area .from the inside of the car it sounds like the heater is on full whack ,that sort of noise if you know what i mean.

and i cant see a window behind the timing belt cover to let me see the back of the belt at all .

just been to the garage today as the noise was getting higher . just by hearing it on idle the fella said its the timing belt tensioner . and quoted me £40 plus VAT.

so chris h is right one more time ,well done mate.

how hard is it to change the tensioner ,do i need speacial tools for the job and most importantly . can an amateur ldo this job with the right instructions ?

Not too sure on your engine but to me it looks like a straight forward job when i look at my engine.
slacken off the tensioner adjuster bolt in the side of the block to take the tension off the cam belt, undo the nut holding the tensioner on, replace and adjust the tensioner again to get the correct deflection on the belt.


Chris would be the man to confirm this thou.

i have just been reading haynes ,it tells u a long story about the whole job which includes taking the timing belt off as well which sounded like a pro job to me .

haynes always go the long "proper" way round....they cant relly put in a manual "bodge" techniques, like growing a thrid hand to hold things while u pop something in...

are u saying that the timing belt does not have to be taken off ?

would ferked tensioner damage the timing belt as well ?

it may do it may not (stay on that is)

as u can see from wickeds...the knackered tensioner has made the belt fuck up....but his is jammed...urs is hopefully still rotating so no damage may have occured

but imho if u r goin to the effort of changin tensioners u may as well stick new belt on anyways...unless its quite new

Tensioner is 1 16mm bolt you can see in the pics.

I have to say if you don;t replace the tensioner and belt then its a bit daft.

The idler on the 16V is held on by T30 screws behind the lower rear cover btw.

The idler on the 8V's is held on by 1 bolt.

right so i am takin it to the garage tomorrow ,as i cant risk to drive in this condition anymore . £40 plus vat sounded good after asking a few other places .

i might as well have the timing belt changed again but thats of course if necessary . in this case they shall not be charging me more than
£40+timing belt price (about 15quid)=vat
as changing the tensioner allready involves taking the belt out and putting back in ,yeah ?

As the other guys have said, if you are going to the trouble to get the tensioner changed, you may as well do the cambelt at the same time.

yes i totally agreed that .

what i am wondering is ,does it make sense for them to charge me only the price of the timing belt as an extra while i have always been quoted £40 plus vat for the tensioner change?

my guess is that they will charge extra to do the belt as well.

they have to take off the roadwheel, bottom cover and crankshaft pully, take off the aux belt and remove your old timing belt, replace, make sure the timing is correct and re assemble.

£72.85 ,thats what it costs to have it done in my local friendly garage. jobs done .he said the tensioner was 42 quid which i think is a load shit.

I paid 70 quid for my energies cambelt tensioner a few years back from renault. If I had bought the kit which is the tensioner and cambelt then it would have cost me 56quid from renault.

1 box synchro ring is dearer than all 5 as a kit.

£98 from renault, cam belt kit for my phase 2 16valve ..

was cheaper from another source, i think about £80 but i decided to go with the genuine renault parts.

Bought a new water pump as well (halfords jobbie) has a black impellor, so gonna fit them all at the same time.
