Hey guys, I don't expect you to be able to diagnose this without actually hearing it, but I've got a whining noise coming from under the cam cover I'd say (that side of the engine at least), and it only happens once the engine's warm. It sounds like a belt, and it obviously corresponds with the engine revs like....you rev it....it whines more, etc. I tried to record it but you just can't make it out on a recording.

I was thinking maybe the cambelt could be rubbing on the cam cover? That's kinda what it sounds like.....but......why would it only happen when the engine was hotter? Hmmm I dunno Confused

ha ha ha...

any of the rotating things with bearings in them, i.e. tensioners, water pump, alt, etc

but i would get the tensioners checked asap, cos if it is them, then they could fail on you, which i guess you dont really want.

happened to me but i was dead lucky the belt didnt come off and wreck some valves...you may not be so lucky!

Okay, cheers guys. Yeah I was guessing it should probably involve something with bearings in etc.....but now the thing is......since the whining has started.......it's now leaking oil. Well, I spoze it might have been leaking before, but I happened to park on a slope on the weekend and so I noticed the trail of oil comin out from underneath. It might have been leaking for a while and I've just not noticed like.

My mate reckons it's the 'crank seal' or something. Can't remember what he said now. Made sense at the time tho lol. Yeah he said something about if it is that, it's not actually under much pressure when the engine's running, so it's not like it's gonna be pissing out at high revs etc......but yeah I still need to get it sorted I spoze. Cuz it could be leaking onto the cambelt etc maybe? Who knows. I'll try and get some better pics of the underneath, but I doubt that'll still show where it's coming from

Oh yeah, btw, that amount of oil in the pic above is after the car had been sat there since 6:00pm saturday night until 4:00pm sunday. So nearly 24hrs like. I had just done a 4 hour drive to birmingham aswell, so she would have been nice & hot when I parked it. I drove home from birmingham with it like that aswell, and the level doesn't seem to have gone down much like, but I dunno. That seems like a lot of oil on the floor to me!

thats a lot of oil and your mates fucking thick as well, not under pressure when running. I take it hes a brain surgeon? I mean no pressure when stopped and 4/5 bar when running, yeah not much pressure when running Rolling Eyes

check the sumps not cracked also are you sure its engine oil.

Chris, the only thing that's making me think it's engine oil is that it's coming from directly underneath the cambelt side of the engine. I don't really see how it could be gearbox oil or anything over that side? Oil pressure is still normal like, but that's not really the point I spoze!

If it is under a lot of pressure when the car is running tho.....I can't understand how I did a 4 hour drive and still had pretty much the same amount of oil as when I left.

If it is the crank seal, whatever thing he was on about, I'm guessing that's a big job cuz it's such a pain in the arse to get to?

if your coolant looks like that, you need to flush the system and put in new stuff!

Yeah! lol. My coolant is pretty good, ever since I flushed the cooling system out about 174 times trying to fix my heater matrix! I reckon I got the cleanest cooling system ever Wink lol.

It's oil, definitely. Ah well, long story cut short.....but my local renault dealer is doing a deal where they'll give ur car a check over for free.....and we're signwriting a courtesy car for them.......so when they dropped the courtesy car off to us, they took mine back with them and they're gonna have a look at it. That's wasn't a long story at all really was it. I'll let you know what they say!

Okay, verdict from Renault.....

I've got a 'major' (hate that word lol) oil leak, and it'll cost £500 - £600 to sort out. Well there's no way I'm paying that. I don't know any details of what is actually leaking etc yet, I just got given a message by someone else at the garage. The mechanic that looked at my car had gone home, but they're getting him to ring me first thing tomorrow, so I'll know more details then.

I really dunno what to do now.....have just spent about £500 getting it through it's MOT, so I don't really wanna get rid of it......but I can't afford to keep it going if it's gonna keep behaving like this Sad doh.

So yeah.....I been thinking of my options.....new car.......new engine in this car......dunno really. I tihnk it's too rusty to make getting a new engine worth it really. Fuck tit shit bastard bollocks. lol

old car they are not trained in sorting tbh. They are also fitters and not mechanics per se.

Chances are the oil seal on the cranks blown out or summat.

Get the car back, remove the drivers wheel and the arch liner and get us some photos. If its super oily then blast it with a jet wash then run it and see where it comes from.

Cheers Chris! I probably won't have time to do anything with the car before the weekend....and I'm meant to be going to london in it on sunday! Well it's been to birmingham & back okay, and also did runs at santapod like this, lol. So I'm sure it'll be okay as long as I keep an eye on the oil level. I'll have to get it sorted at some point tho. Anyone in the london area fancy giving me a hand with it? Wink lol. I'm guessing it's a twat of a job, the crank seal?

I'll try and get some pics anyway Chris, cheers Smile

Oh shit! How did it die? Just from losing all the oil and ceasing up?

I meant to ask before, if the crank seal is leaking, is oil likely to be getting on the cambelt?
