is it plugged into anything?
I assume its a at the front of the head. It should have just a normal hex head plug in place. |

It's at the front of the head in a water pipe. According to Haynes the CTS should be there. Haven't looked at Dialogies yet. |

dialogies don't tell you anything.
CTS should be mounted at the front of the head but its no use whatsoever on a diesel. |

No point in replacing it then, I'll just stick the duff one back in! |

The temp sender unit is at the back of the head the CTS is in a hose in front of the head both to the right hand side. On a TD the CTS is in the Thermostat housing according to Haynes and also my friends R19 TD. So as it does have one (I can take photo's if you like) should I replace it as it appears to be duff? What does the CTS actually do anyway? |

yes take photos cos you don;t have one.
The CTS tells the ECU (which you don't have) what temp the water is and adjusts the fuel map accordingly.
Diesels like yours are purely mechanical. |

Right, quick update! I've changed the thermostat but they gave me the wrong one!!! A friend picked it up for me and they've gone and given her the 82 one instead of the 89 one...what and how much difference will this make??? Now, if the HG has gone should I not have mayo in the oil cap? When I filled it up with water after the thermostat change and CTS clean there was very little smoke and it was a bit intermittant (took it for a wee spin after filling it back up with water). The temperature with water only didn't go above halfway between the first and second notches. |

Dunno what the diff is there but not in every case you have mayo in the oil when you hg is gone when it only leaks coolant out of the block or into the cylinder you'll just lose it or see white smoke, but when it's leaking near an oilway and a waterway then you'll be getting the mayo |

So, it probably is still the HG! If the water's not mixing with the oil what's gonna happen if say, I keep driving it until the end of the month? What about til' Thursday? |

If water gets in your cylinder parts can damage because of it being water. The head could get cracks in it i think (but chances aren't big that'll happen) The are other things thinkable but one way or the other if it's the HG your better get it fixed asap, the sooner the better! And it being a diesel should make it an easier job then a 16v would be i asume. |

The smoke is caused by the mini indian sat in your back box sending you smoke signals. |

thats just a normal gauge sender, might have 1 for the light the other for the gauge but its not a CTS. CTS is a square plug and has different values than any of the oval plug efforts.
Anyway when my sisters hg went there was no water in the oil, just water pissing out the exhaust and it cracked the header tank. It doesn't have to burst into the oil circuit. BTW the laguna is still smoking, she fooked it proper by carrying on driving.
82 degree stat will leave you with a cooler heater but aside from that no real problems.
I wouldn't carry on driving it, if you do it will probably end up in the scrap heap. |
