put a spanner on the bottom pulley and turn the engine over with it. Or stick it in 4th and shove the car.

Right, heads cleaned and back on...old timing belt ended up going back on for now coz I couldn't get the Cam pulley off the bolt is seized solid!!!! (Neither could the big strong boy so it's not just coz I'm a girl!). Put everything back to where it should be in the pissing rain, refilled with water then tried starting...PROBLEM! Shocked !! As soon as I turn the key it makes a noise...the only way I can describe it is that it sounds electrical! Battery was the last thing I reconnected and everything lights up as per normal. Could this be coz the whole entire engine is soaking wet coz I spent 3 hours putting it back together in the rain in an attempt to get my freedom back?

Didn't think the head bolts were that hard to get off or back on btw and that is despite my having to climb on top of the engine bay to reach the back ones!

You dont need to take the cam pulley bolt off? just slide the belt off the side?

Whatever the bottom one is called that's the one we couldn't get off!

Right, it is turning over manually. Have checked the battery, battery connections, full 12v at the solenoid, took the positive terminals off the starter motor and cleaned, cleaned the stop solenoid connection and a couple of other manky bits on the fuel pump thing. Checked for resistance across b and c terminals on another connector thing like what it says to do in haynes, perfect reading!!!

Getting all the normal dash lights again sometimes. Going to check the ignition end of things next. What do you think???

so is the engine turning over on the starter or not?

is it just not running?

What ignition, all you have is a stop solenoid, its a diesel!

I mean the ignition inside the car (where the key goes). Nothing is happening when I turn the key, turned the engine manually.

Nope didn't forget to unlock it. When I turn the key the dash lights come on, turn to start, lights go out (except handbrake) and nothing happens.
