speaking of which...the handbrake lever on the caliper....does it mechanically apply pressure to the piston or does it somehow apply fluid pressure? I assume its some kind of cam effort directly on the piston.

see the slot in that screw ting? Well a metal bar twists into that shoving the pads into contact with the disc.

Purely mechanical.

OK thought happy birthday was a bit short, may as well make a point.

The interesting thing about this piece is the fact that it has corrosion on the outer part, this led to brake fluid leaking into the rubber boot as the pads wore down. The car has had its brake fluid changed every second year since new (The piece has been in the shed for over a year – bit of rust on the screw).

I don’t know if this is a common problem? But if you are under the car its a good idea to check the grease under the boot.

You get an inner kit from Renault to fix it. Normally needs a tool to get the thing back in against the “Belleville” spring washers. Did it but!!!. The washers were rusted away inside.

Same callipers on the Pug 206 rear. Check inside all but only one side on the 19 had a problem.

Anyway well spotted Chris;

its not uncommon, worse if the boots split and lets water in.

The special tool I use to fit them back in is my arse, I sit on a breaker bar to compress it enough to slide the pivot arm through
