Head is in the machine shop! Dropped it there last night, expect to get it back in a fortnight.

Once thats done I can get on with any porting/JB welding i need to and get it assembled!

Might even have a complete engine before long!

Die grinder problem solved with the addition of a compressor to my arsenel.

Not really big enough for the job but due to money its all I could afford. It will do the job tho.

Image

do along with this i have a simple air die grinder.

Got the head back today!

Now I asked the guy to stick the new seats in and bore the throat cut, but then leave them at that stage. So no seat angles have been cut yet. This is so I can now do all the porting I need to do without the risk of catching the nice new seat cuts with the grinder and fucking them up.

Once the porting is done I take it back and he cuts the seats for me.

As you can see he has rough cut just one seat, the others are blank.

Have given it another clean as it was full of swarf from the machining.

So time to get to work on it.

dont think i've shown this yet but here are the valves im going to be using.

[img:1152:864:b873f349e7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/hatch/valves.jpg[/img:b873f349e7]

34.6mm Mi16 inlet valves, with a back cut added by supplier.

Supplier BTW Dave Baker at Pumaracing http://www.pumaracing.co.uk

rocker cover too, as in the other, but its more to do with the engine build than anything

Getting off my arse and starting some work.

Started applying the JB Weld where I want it to reshape the ports slightly.

Rough up and key the area where I want to apply JB Weld:
[img:864:1152:0298a64e0b]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/16.jpg[/img:0298a64e0b]

Then using tape, simply to dam the exit so it cant run out, and using plasticine on the valve seat, i fill with JB Weld.

[img:864:1152:0298a64e0b]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/18.jpg[/img:0298a64e0b]

[img:864:1152:0298a64e0b]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/21.jpg[/img:0298a64e0b]

I know its a bit hard to see whats going on, but I am basically filling one side of the port, to make it narrower, plus making it symetrical, as the ports to the valves are off centre.

Thats the plan anyway.

had a bit of a thought this week...old bits of dismantled hatch at entrance to garage, then lots of stuff...then at the back, the new engine coming together...hmm thats gunna be hard to get out.

So I had a sort out, cleared a nice clean area by the entrance to finish the build. much better.

been cleanign things and sticking them on...i take too long over things is my problem.

cleaning bits...

got a megane oil cooler to go on instead of the thinner 1.8 version...even tho its debateable if they actually do anything, it was free so may as well whack it on...cheers Jimbo for that.

bought a few more bits today....

new mounts to go with my Nealio special rear one.

also got a dipstick tube on order, as the one off the hatch block also snapped off in my hand.

More assembly. Painted up a few brkts earlier just with hammeraite because they were manky and rusty.

New mounts in position....

Front mount...
Image

Gearbox mount...
Image

Then the power steering pump, within its bracket, also clamping support plates in position...
Image

Image

Block to Alternator bracket support strut....this also clamps the Dipstick tube (new!) and one of the inlet plenum support struts to the block...

Image

bit concerned about this one. Due to the thicker megane oil cooler I got, it looks as tho an oil filter won't actually fit! The one that I got off the hatch engine didnt, but that seems to be thicker than the one I currently have on the Chamade, so I need to go buy a filter and check it fits...if it doesn't, either modify the strut, leave it off or leave the cooler off.

My new dipstick tube (old one snapped off) bet they don't get many of these being ordered at renault.

Image

Bit hard to see but added the other Alt support plate...

Image
Image

The Alt going in along with more brkts, inc. one direct to block at top for attaching the tensioning brkt to, the tensioning brkt itself between this and the alt cradle...

---------------

block nearly finished...just need to get on with the head....have started finishing it but for various reasons its taking time.

righty may as well post up some progress pics of the head...

not finished yet, still only about half way thru...its a lot of work! (for those wondering why it costs so much)

as i said before i had the large seats inserted but not cut so i could work in the ports without the risk of fucking nice newly cut seats...good job too Razz

Heres some inlets more or less finished...note uncut seats...the combustion chamber is half finished here as I havent done much around the zorst seats yet.
[img:1152:864:128e26a5d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/26.jpg[/img:128e26a5d8]

finished all the inlets to a stage where i could take it back to the machinist to do the seats, while there we decided to give it a skim and also recut the old zorst seats too...so here it is all skimmed and new seats etc...
[img:864:1152:128e26a5d8]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/28.jpg[/img:128e26a5d8]

only problem is that i have yet to work in the zorst ports yet so my plan to have uncut seats to work thru kinda failed there...just have to be careful!

here is half finished combustion chamber with some dummy valves fitted to the zorst side...ground down so they protect the seats so i can work the chamber.

More porting work underway. All thats needed is to do the exhaust ports and finish combustion chambers.

Exhaust port before:

[img:1152:864:ab0d5b17ec]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/31.jpg[/img:ab0d5b17ec]

and after:

[img:1152:864:ab0d5b17ec]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/32.jpg[/img:ab0d5b17ec]

a shot showing one done and one untouched side by side:

[img:1152:864:ab0d5b17ec]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/36.jpg[/img:ab0d5b17ec]

A completed combustion chamber:

[img:1152:864:ab0d5b17ec]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/34.jpg[/img:ab0d5b17ec]

[img:1152:864:ab0d5b17ec]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/35.jpg[/img:ab0d5b17ec]

To be honest, I am not 100% happy and there is more I would like to do but limited by tools at the mo.

head pretty much finished...still one or two more little areas to tidy up, but they are just details...the majority of the work is done, just awaiting some new bitsi n the post.

[img:864:1152:6ada7a9cf0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/38.jpg[/img:6ada7a9cf0]

[img:1152:864:6ada7a9cf0]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/newhead/37.jpg[/img:6ada7a9cf0]

then its time to reassemble the head and test fit it to the block...and hopefully finish her off.

Well its been a while since I did anything in here...thats because its been a while since there has been any news to update in here.....which is because I have been so busy with uni mainly that I simply haven't had time to do anything with the engine, nor the car...

but now winter is on the way out and i have refreshed interest in getting this finished....I've had the car over a year Confused and the engine longer!

I managed to flow the head in uni as we have access to a flow bench here which is nice.

Here are some basic comparisons between a standard unported F7P head and my big valve jobby head.

THEY SHOULD SAY CFM NOT CFD!

Image
This is the inlet, with the bigger valves.

Image
And this is the exhaust...same sized valves, just ported out.

So not bad results, I'm happy for my first proper attempt, but of course the proof will be in the pudding.

----------------------

Recently (i.e. this week) I have started to reassembly the engine or continue to anyway. I have nearly rebuilt the head after cleaning it out thoroughly after lapping in all the valves.

The cams I am starting with are a set of Williams cams, until I can afford something better.

I refurbed a set of tappets for it too....boring!

So the valves are in, tappets are in, the cams are nearly in and then once the cams are in I will install it using an old gasket to check the valve clearances. I suspect they may come very close if not touch, so may need a bit of grinding on the pistons. We shall see.

Then once that is done I can fit the head properly and the engine will be pretty much complete ready for fitting.

Still need a few sundries for it...such as plugs, leads, oil, filter, dizzy...all the little bastard bits that end up adding up to a fortune...which i don't have! oh and headbolts Rolling Eyes

still..moving forward again.

Well got round to performing the plasticine test to check the valve clearance as best I could.

stuck some plasticine on the piston:
[img:640:480:4dfb4923e7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/enginebuild/Image342.jpg[/img:4dfb4923e7]

then bolted the head on, timed it up, turned it over, removed head to see the damage:

[img:640:480:4dfb4923e7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/enginebuild/Image346.jpg[/img:4dfb4923e7]

not anywhere near as bad as I thought...sliced it in half and, although not very clear to see, looks like there is about 2.5mm of clearance here with the willy cams

[img:480:640:4dfb4923e7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/enginebuild/Image347.jpg[/img:4dfb4923e7]

I did not perform this test with the hydraulic tappets as they are just not reliable. This is plain to see if you set the cams in a position where the valves are open, within minutes the valves have sunken in as they compress the tappet...even if you have primed them up.

So I made up a solid tappet to perform this test which simply comprised of a piece of bar ground until it was a perfect fit under the cam. The bar sits in the place of the hydraulic plunger in an old tappet:

[img:80:96:4dfb4923e7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/enginebuild/Image348.jpg[/img:4dfb4923e7]
(dont know why its such a small pic)

Here is the valve fully open with the solid tappet:

[img:640:480:4dfb4923e7]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/enginebuild/Image345.jpg[/img:4dfb4923e7]

So I feel ready to go ahead and bolt the head on now...once I get some new head bolts.

...getting there Smile

Wahoo! Some time and progress!

Sunny summer hols hacve arrived so I am getting on a bit.

Head is all assembled, and fitted to the block, so now the engine is starting to look complete and ready to install!

heres the head on the bench ready to go on...

[img:640:480:9274167105]http://www.renault-turbo.com/jonboy/enginebuild/head.jpg[/img:9274167105]

it is on now, but no pics yet...need to dig out the digicam for a tidy picture.

just need some sundries...leads, duzzy cap, fluids, a box mount...few things but they all add up.

right, i think this is finished now, seeing as it is in the hatch.

apart from reporting on how it runs, this could be the end of this report methinks.

some final pics before it went in...
