Hi Everyone!

Thought I would sign up and ask for a wee bit advice!

First of all the I am Bob, from Fife in Sunny Scotland! How you all doin? :)

Right I currently drive a 1992 Cavalier SRi 16v, The Red Top version. I have been offered an L Reg Renault 19 16v as a swap for it. I will probably get a slightly biased view here like but do think its a fair swap?

Car has a full years MOT on it, Stainless Exhaust, Induction Kit, 17" Alloys.
Mine has similiar modifications.

Just after some general buying advice as well! Have been speaking to a few mates and they have advised me not to swap for this car. lol

Thanks for any advice offered!

Bob :)

thought your brother had one mate? You remember me from migweb?

ph1 19's willbe as ruusty as the cav, earlier ph1's tend to be in general better condition bodywise.

Its a fair swap but the red tops a better engine, mainly due to it being over 200cc's bigger!

Theres no question the 19 handles better though.

i would say the 19 aswell as you dont see many for a start

secondily they look better

and third i own one

as in a fair swap that always comes down to weather is something you want bad enough to not care what car has been givin up. (in this case a cavvy Rolling Eyes ) the cavvy is worth more money but the 19 wins hands down on smiles per miles

take it for a test drive on your own and rag the shit out of it at high revs and make sure its all up to scratch.... also you will fall in love!! Very Happy Thumbs Up!

biased Rolling Eyes noooooooooo Laughing

Alright Chris yeah a remember you from MIG! lol Gave me some advice on my bruvs 19.

He had a 16v Chamade and to be honest he had a fair amount of bother with it. Was looking for a wider opinion in case he just had a bad one. Mind you it took him ages (and a £600 MOT) to part with it. I drove his a while back and liked it which is why I am considering the swap.

It is a Phase 2 this one, going by the photos looks in pretty good condition. Just been MOT'd (Needed rear pads and a gearbox mount) 116,000 Miles on it.

Never owned a Renault myself, mainly been Vauxhalls. This is my Cav....

Been speaking to a few people I know and they all seem to be slating the 16v lol which is why I am on here asking for your views. I know in general people tend to slate cars they havent actually owned.

I tried to attach images using the [img] link but doesnt seem to be working.

Any guidance/advice is appreciated!

The Cav does have rust around the rear arches which you cant see. Also some vandal damage around the drivers door handle.

The 19 was fitted with 15" TSW Stealths but now has the 17s in the top photo fitted.

Right lads,
Seen the car tonight. Doesnt seem to be any rust, engines sounds fine. No knocks or rattles when turning.

BUT

In 1st gear foot to the floor it jumps out of gear at 4000revs. The guy didnt try and hide this from me though, he told me before I got in the car.

Any ideas? At the moment I am not convinced. lol

It just had a gearbox mount fitted for its MOT.

Would a mount cause this type of problem? Sounds a bit strange, he has just emailed he is gonna take it to a mate of his tomorrow who is a mechanic. He can get a Gearbox for £30 from a guy who breaks 19 16valves if it is that.

check the oil level on it as well.

Could be a dead or dying box.

Could still be the mounts.

If I am gonna take the car I would be swapping this weekend so any info people can give would be much appreciated. Hopefully he has more info from the mechanic later today. Just confirmed the problem is only with first gear.
