Time to do the matrix. So the dash came off again!

[img:567:425:6b4b0af735]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/Y%20matrix%20renewal%2001.jpg[/img:6b4b0af735]

the heater box removed

[img:567:425:6b4b0af735]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/Y%20matrix%20renewal%2002.jpg[/img:6b4b0af735]

the bonnet release handle was broken when I had the trim off before so I changed it

[img:567:425:6b4b0af735]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/Y%20matrix%20renewal%2004.jpg[/img:6b4b0af735]

filled an alarm cable hole with silicone

[img:567:425:6b4b0af735]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/Y%20matrix%20renewal%2005.jpg[/img:6b4b0af735]

[img:567:425:6b4b0af735]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/Y%20matrix%20renewal%2006.jpg[/img:6b4b0af735]

new matrix hose stubs

[img:567:425:6b4b0af735]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/Y%20matrix%20renewal%2007.jpg[/img:6b4b0af735]

So the matrix was sorted, as was the bonnet cable and all was well.

For some reason the car must have been perfect from December to the end of March 2006

30th March 2006

I got colour coded red wing mirrors with the Black Executive, so I fitted these, really smartened up the outside

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/project%20y%20colour%20coded%20mirrors.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

The car then took a trip down south to help out Doc

The trip finished off the backbox!

It was very loud coming home with it. Also the trip had removed some of the blakc pinstripe on the car, so it was removed fully on both sides.

This is with the stripe

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20stripe%2001.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

stripe off

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20stripe%2002.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

Whilst in England - somewhere we got an exhaust repair, it never lasted

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2001.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

gone at the backbox as well

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2002.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

big hole, the support bracket used to be here

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2003.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

after a wire brushing at the backbox

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2004.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

so I chopped a bit of metal from an old cat heatshield up

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2005.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

tried to clean the pipe up without making more holes

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2006.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

patche welded on, lol

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2007.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

terrible, but it done the job

[img:378:567:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2008.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

slap a load of paste on just to be sure

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2009.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exh%20fix%2010.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

So the exhaust was fitted and working again. But not for long.

2 weeks later and about 400 miles on the exhuast broke, so it was papped in the boot

[img:567:378:3df4ddeefd]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20boot%20spares.jpg[/img:3df4ddeefd]

short vid of how it sounded with no backbox

right click save as 2.6mb

http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%203%20door%20no%20back%20box.MOV

The 1.2 Clio was sorted out so that was pressed into service and this car was left to be sorted by me.

A few ideas were in the works, I first planned to turbo the 1.4 engine as it was basically a GTT engine.

Then something happened so I bought a new backbox and stuck it on along with a spare wheel carrier.

9/6/06

note cable ties, these were replaced with the rubbers a day later when they came in.

[img:567:378:93655955fe]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20new%20exh%20and%20wheel%20carrier.jpg[/img:93655955fe]

Then things changed again and I was back to turbo idea. I then aquired an RSI engine in exchange for some work i done.

In the end I took neither of these routes.

I will do another report on the turbo and RSI adventures.

11th July 2006

The exec has just been stropped and the two people that wanted the engine pulled out for different reasons (pyscho ex and money) so I was left with a 16V engine.

The RSI engine had its loom repaired by me, but to make it fit in the 19 as I wanted it I needed to buy stuff, that was going to blow my budget of zero right out the water.

So I sorted out the problems the exec engine had

The oil leak from the top end was caused by someone before using the wrong size cam seal!

[img:378:567:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%2001.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

[img:378:567:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%2002.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

sealant used to try and bridge the gap

[img:567:378:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%2003.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

oil pump pulley removed

[img:378:567:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%2004.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

crank pulley

[img:567:378:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%2005.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

tensioner and idler

[img:567:378:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%2006.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

I bet it took longer to put this sealant on that ordering the right bits.

[img:567:378:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%2007.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

seals and sealant out

[img:567:378:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%2008.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

old seals.

[img:567:378:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%2009.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

clean the hole

[img:567:378:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%20repair%2001.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

fit the right seal, job done!

[img:567:378:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/Black%20exec/exec%20leak%20repair%2002.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

Put that back together after it was cleaned, much cleaner!

[img:378:567:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/exec%20engine%20cambelt%20cover%20cleaned.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

The dodgy wire I fitted to the exec for the oil light had done its job but it was time to fix properly

[img:567:378:30b3245302]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/exec%20engine%20damaged%20wiring%2001.jpg[/img:30b3245302]

so new wire was let in to all the damaged areas.

So it was time to prepare the car for the conversion.

I first popped the 16V backbox on just to see what it looked like, great is the answer, I love it, 80's chrome dustbin look!

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%2016V%20backbox%2001.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%2016v%20backbox%2002.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

I pulled the front bumper off as well to free up the subframe bolts, they got a good soak in penetrating fluid

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20bumper%20off.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

I swapped the black 16V belts and the exec door cards over into the car

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20exec%20belts.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

I had to sort out the wiring as the carbed engine never had a fuel pump feed to the back etc.

I had a 16V rear loom, could I find where I put it? No, I did of course find it the day after! Typical.

So I had to make it, using this old dash loom I got the best and thickest wires to do my fuel pump wiring

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20wiring%2001.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

The fuel pump plug just happened to be the same size as the ph1 dash looms sidelight dim dip resistors. It also had nice thick wiring on it as well, so was good enough for the pump.

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20wiring%2002.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

the white wire is the starter solenoid feed wire from the dash (thick) the black wire is the main dash earth wire.

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20wiring%2003.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

the wire fitted into the standard plug as standard

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20wiring%2004.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

run in the clips

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20wiring%2005.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

wire runs through the channel then to the tank wires grommet, the earth runs to the rear panel earth as standard.

[img:567:378:5ef0e67701]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20wiring%2006.jpg[/img:5ef0e67701]

It needed the EFI tank so it could have the fuel pump, again from the black exec

[img:567:378:3c873867f4]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20tank%2001.jpg[/img:3c873867f4]

fuel pump sock, cleaner than expected

[img:567:378:3c873867f4]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20tank%2002.jpg[/img:3c873867f4]

hard to see in this pic, but pinhole leaks, no option have to use it

[img:378:567:3c873867f4]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20tank%2003.jpg[/img:3c873867f4]

16V efi fuel lines and charcoal canister

[img:378:567:3c873867f4]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20tank%2004.jpg[/img:3c873867f4]

my fuel pump power feed wire on the right

[img:567:378:3c873867f4]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20tank%2005.jpg[/img:3c873867f4]

Tank was fitted as well the lines etc.

Had to leave the car and fix others for a few days.

Time to get cracking.

Steering column pinch bolt needed removed

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20manual%20column%20pinch%20bolt.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

manual rack column removed

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20column%20removed.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

the front subframe was removed from the exec. Why? Well the subframe is stronger than the 1.4's. it was in better condition, it also had everythign bolted to it, the 16V wishbones are longer giving the 16V's a wider track

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/16V%20subframe%20removed.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

I then had to drop the red cars subframe and engine etc out

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20subframe%20dropped%2001.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

the pikey way I had to use to get the car up high enough so I could pull the frame and engine out - all by myself no less!

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20subframe%20dropped%2003.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

the manual and power steering columns side by side, the manual one if the lower longer one

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/manual%20and%20power%20steering%20column.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

this is the clutch cable where it goes into the bulkhead to the pedal, as you can see the grommet was split, so I stuck another cable in

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20clutch%20cable%20bulkhead.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

a pic looking up from inside the bay

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20be%20the%20engine.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

the column gaiter fitted to the bulkhead

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20column%20gaiter%20fitted.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

the rear subframe mounting point, I cleaned this up

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20rear%20subframe%20mount.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

the cleaned as new efi fuel lines where they enter the engine bay

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20fuel%20lines%20end.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

I needed to fit the fuel filter and bracket, I had a nice new filter for the job.

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20fuel%20filter%2001.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

[img:378:567:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20fuel%20filter%2002.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20fuel%20filter%2003.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

the proper bracket fitted

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20efi%20fuel%20filter%2004.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

the front subframe was mounted and it now had nice 16V brakes instead of its crappy original bendix calipers

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%2016V%20brakes.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

charcoal canister fitted

[img:567:378:f73db8795f]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20charcoal%20canister%20fitted.jpg[/img:f73db8795f]

PS oil cooler etc fitted

8th August 2006

The plan was to make the car acceptable to me, which meant makign it factory, that involved moving the master cyl resovoir etc

this pic shows the servo vacuum pipe and plastic brackets, all 16V now, the 1.4 just had a rubber hose

[img:567:378:b8411a273d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%2016v%20master%2001.jpg[/img:b8411a273d]

old resovoir removed and 16V pipe adaptors fitted

[img:567:378:b8411a273d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%2016V%20master%2002.jpg[/img:b8411a273d]

all sorted, apart from the resovoirs bracket.

[img:567:378:b8411a273d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%2016V%20master%2003.jpg[/img:b8411a273d]

The air inlet was originally on the nearside inner wing

[img:567:378:b8411a273d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20ai%2001.jpg[/img:b8411a273d]

for the 16V I only had the ph2 rad surround so that meant slam panel air inlet instead of the ph1's rad surround air inlet, I also had to fit the captive screw things

[img:378:567:b8411a273d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20ai%2002.jpg[/img:b8411a273d]

screwed in, just need to wait for the airhose and airbox

[img:567:378:b8411a273d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20ai%2003.jpg[/img:b8411a273d]

I then bolted allt he stuff up to make sure it would all go, looking good

[img:567:378:b8411a273d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20bay%20pre%20engine%20install.jpg[/img:b8411a273d]

the nearside caliper got a new hose as well

[img:378:567:b8411a273d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20ns%2016V%20caliper.jpg[/img:b8411a273d]

The next day was the planned engine install day

So I had a small problem

[img:567:378:cc9e1fd939]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/c-type%2001.jpg[/img:cc9e1fd939]

[img:567:378:cc9e1fd939]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/c-type%2003.jpg[/img:cc9e1fd939]

It had newish mounts, new clutch, new points, ran sweet, had everything, good engine only done 90k! tried to sell it, then tried to give it away. Eventually I just fitted it to the exec!

Anyway airbox fitted to the car

right click save as 2.7meg

http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%2016V%20running%20airbox.MOV

The engine bay with the airbox. The airbox wasn;t easy to fit, due to the fact the 16V headlights are different the box and bracket actually touch the headlight! It fits but its tight!

[img:567:378:cc9e1fd939]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%2016V%20engine%20bay%20complete.jpg[/img:cc9e1fd939]

I had to sort out the brake resovoir bracket. I wanted the stock look and thats what I got. I drilled hole sint he bulkhead and put bolts in from the back, totally standard to look at.

The car decided it would make its aux water pump work, wouldn't go off though, took the relay out and this is why

[img:567:378:dea3faeaeb]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20aux%20water%20pump%20relay.jpg[/img:dea3faeaeb]

cleaned it up seemed to work for a bit and has now gone back to not working. Oh well.

My mum bought a buffing machine, so I decided to try it out as the car is quite faded, right half buffed left not

[img:567:378:dea3faeaeb]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20buff%2001.jpg[/img:dea3faeaeb]

buffed part

[img:567:378:dea3faeaeb]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20buff%2002.jpg[/img:dea3faeaeb]

non buffed half!

[img:567:378:dea3faeaeb]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20buff%2003.jpg[/img:dea3faeaeb]

i finished the bonnet off and got bored, so left it! lol

I then fitted the ph1 wheels with Toyo's from my chamade to the car, much better than the ph2's that were on it.

[img:567:378:dea3faeaeb]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20ph1%20toyos%20fitted.jpg[/img:dea3faeaeb]

I also got my NEW frotn drivers seat subframe so fitted that

[img:567:378:dea3faeaeb]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/Y%20new%20seat%20subframe%2001.jpg[/img:dea3faeaeb]

lovely! I have to thank Doc for getting me it, I forgot about it on ebay, but he got it for me, top man!

My mum put a tenner in the tank and this happened

[img:567:378:ed3365492d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20car%20efi%20tank%20leak%2001.jpg[/img:ed3365492d]

the leak had got a lot worse

[img:567:378:ed3365492d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20car%20efi%20tank%20leak%2002.jpg[/img:ed3365492d]

So we all went out in the car for a nice wee run to Loch Lubnaig and the surrounding area, car behaved perfectly of course

[img:567:378:ed3365492d]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20car%20loch%20lubnaig.jpg[/img:ed3365492d]

need to get a tank though.

I lowered the back end a tad to get it sitting better.

[img:567:378:c8089c368e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20car%20lowered%2001.jpg[/img:c8089c368e]

theres more pics and a vid in the lowering tech article.

The only problem with the car was I used a straight through midsection and it rubbed slightly and was very annoying, I also had a normal mid section so I put that on instead and the heatshields

[img:567:378:c8089c368e]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20underside%20mid%20and%20heatshield.jpg[/img:c8089c368e]

I also added chemical metal to the tank, it helped a lot. It considerably cut down the smell of petrol

I done a compresion test on the engine

[img:567:378:35721d3626]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20comp%20test.jpg[/img:35721d3626]

perfect across the engine. Well happy, I knew it was a good 16V lump, only slight problem is its slightly tappety if left for a few days.

Another engine bay shot, cos I like it

[img:567:378:35721d3626]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20engine%20bay%2019%20-%2009.jpg[/img:35721d3626]

I bought 4 new tyres to fit to the car as I wanted my toyos back ont he chammy and 1 of the toyos keeps going down due to a rim leak. L:ast thign I wanted was my mum driving ona flat tyre and ruining the tyre or worse yet smashing the car!

Top Performaer, from mytyres.net, £100 for the 4 delivered, bargain! I would have gone for the toyos but was skint.

[img:378:567:7e1afe24d4]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/new%20tyres%20top%2001.jpg[/img:7e1afe24d4]

[img:567:378:7e1afe24d4]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/new%20tyres%20top%2002.jpg[/img:7e1afe24d4]

My best condition alloys for the tyres

[img:567:378:7e1afe24d4]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/alloys%20for%20top%20tyres.jpg[/img:7e1afe24d4]

tyres fitted and on the car

[img:567:378:7e1afe24d4]http://www.renault-turbo.com/chris/red%203%20door/red%20new%20tyres%20bling%20wheels.jpg[/img:7e1afe24d4]

Now that the tyres have been on and driven on they are slightly noisier than the Toyos but are very, very good for the money. The toyos are better but these are a lot better than I expected.
