Welcome!

nice white 5 GTT you had there.

not to sure about the clio 16v trasnplant, and i dont think anyone on Retro-Renault will condone that to be a good idea, but then its your car do as you wish.

shame about the 106 rallye eh.

and the black 5 turbo is rather spanking!

aye, if it was a regular clio, then its a good conversion, but its just replacing a good engine with a bad one!

But anyway, theyre nice cars, hope you look after the 5!!!

theres nothing wrong with the 1.8 16v lump but there is also nothing wrong with the C1J block..

changing the engine was just a personal choice and my old lumps being built/dropped into a track car so it not all bad news.. while i as taking it apart i realised how solid a block it was. for 110 thousand miles there was nearly no bore wear and in general its got me planning for a later project with one in the future.

the 1.4 turbo gets a bad rep from poor DIY tuning and boyracers who have NO idea how to increase power safely.. head gaskets and turbos blow due to bad fueling set ups, poor maintenance, and silly boost..

the block itself is strong as is the gearbox, but being old it'll suffer the odd component failure but starters, alternators etc will last years & years once replaced..

i could have used another style of clio but the 16v has the brake set up, suspension, body, and look i want. i promise i wont stick any body kit rubbish on it, neon washer jets, big bore 4s, 22" crome spinners + there will be NO dreams of Lax Flower.. Smile

well its still a 1930ish design, a pushrod engine. even triumph used OHC before the GTT lump was made!

glass half empty there?

mines half full... its an engine that been around for years and therefore was clearly a well developed engine to start with..

your gonna have to find some better reasons for it being bad other than its an old push rod lump.... even the tuners spout bull sh1t about engine componants being weak and unable to take certain boost/power levels, just to sell parts..

c1j is a great engine... Cool

it isn't all that great!

Also its not 1930's design, its from the late 50's early 60's.

therews no question its strong and can make power but so can any engine.

Other engines can just do it better and easier.

Go Dirty d Razz

Question is who the hell am i??

The c1j rocks...... all this poo about hg's.... are from prats that turn the boost up and do not uprate any other items, cooling fueling etc.

The engine is strong and for penuts can be modded to kill most modern day cars Very Happy

I COMPLETELY agree Cool Its a very resistant engine and will take MUCH more abuse than the 1.8 16v could ever handle.!! It may be older but more fun to tune Razz Razz

Thought id add a few things being that ive done the clio gtt conversion myself. Valver engine is ok but for a 16v dohc it isnt all that special and is expencive to tune and completly unproven on the drag strip.

I can see r5 gtt's getting into the 10 second 1/4 mile times if not this year will be next year. Also dont need to be a "cheque book racer" to get very good power from the c1j.

Oh and since doing the conversion on my clio 16v, the car handles alot better with the gtt engine being so much lighter than the valver lump. Very Happy

seeing this your a bit of a twat really

http://www.rtoc.org/boards/thread.asp?ShowType=1&SortColumn=1&SortOrder=2&TimePeriod=5&BoardID=13&TopicID=46601

no one said it was shite, we just said its not as good as you lot like to make out.

The 16V is a shite engine, the heads all wrong, they corrected a lot of faults with the megane head but its no YB or XE.

No one mentioned headgaskets either, only retards make them pop, well set up the head gasket etc will last fine and they can make the power, 300bhp is fine on them if done properly but they are not that nice to drive.

16V lumps can make 300bhp all day as well, its just well theres no point, might as well start off with a decent car

I didn't know RTOC had gone so petty, one comment about the 5 lump and they're off

That's pathetic!

TBH some of the open forum conversations on here yesterday were on par with that though.

We should be careful not to go in the same direction as other forums, otherwise it negates the reason for coming here in the first place.
