The car started as Renault 5 1.1 Campus (45HP), but 2 days ago the car has new "heart" - 1.4 8V engine (E6J) out of Renault Clio. The engine got some new parts: complete set of gasgets for upper parts of the engine (head gasget, for valve cover, intake and exhaust gasget etc), new belts + tensioner (i don't know if that is the appropriate word), head was lowerd for 0.2mm, new valve seats were cut and so on. I have also ported the head and matched the ports with intake manifold.

here are some pictures:

old engine:

where is the engine Mr. Green

my friend swaped the engine (offcourse i've helped him) working on electrics:

i'll upload some new pictures in a few days.

i have some problems with the engine - gasget between intake manifold and carb is fuc*** up, new one cost arround 50€ (little bit too much), so we'll be putting a new temporary carb on (Solex 32/34 Z10) on wednesday.. ..until I get one Weber 36 IDF (of an Alfa 33 1.5) Twisted Evil

good job, I always planned on doing this conversion, never got around to it though.

Bin the clio manifold an dget a 19 manifold, the carb gasket is only £5 and its solid.

The head lowered 0.2mm, the term skimmed is the correct one.

The energy is a great engine.

actualy this is E7J engine, with intake manifold and carb from R19 Laughing

I searched all over Slovenia and the best price for that gasget was 40-50€ Rolling Eyes

here are some pictures of head porting (i didn't do much, i have just smoothed those nasty sharp edges in the ports):

that headwork is fine mate, good basic job which will yield good gains. Its also the early straight piort head so a much better base as well.

thats not the 19's manifold mate, thats the clios one which may have been used in your country but the 19's carb mount is square and the gasket is solid not the crappy rubber bellow on that one.

that engine is very interesing, the engine block is about the same of the gtturbo, the head is a little better, is crossflow, bigger valves, camshaft in the head
turbo and efi conversion are pretty easy

its nothing like the GTT engine, wet liners is abotu it but they are totally different lengths etc.

There was a turbo kit for them but due to the money no one bought it!

efi is indeed very easy as there are millions of them produced in efi form, from the 19 through the megane and scenic to the new shape clio. Engine capacity varies from 1.2 - 1.6 litres.

the heads are extremely good with little work up to 156bhp gain is possible on the head alone. Thats not changing anything else.

The 1.4's will aso rev safely to 8krpm as standard daily. The 1.6 isn't a revver at all. The 1.4 is the best all rounder for the energy engine.

yes thats right
im making a 1.4 energy with efi and with turbo, already got the inlet manifold, the turbo manifold its being done for the t2 turbo from the gtturbo, and the 21turbo ECU
the car is still a secret

curently i'm running on Weber 32 TLDR carb, but i'm planing for someting different.. ..bike carb (from Kawasaki ZX6R or something similar - diameter around 34mm) or bike ITBs with EFI (megasquirt) or one Weber 36 IDF on standard manifold (this is the cheapes one). i'll be doing this over this winter, so (i hope) the car will be finished next spring.

this is my everyday car and i'm driving autoslaloms with it (5-6 per year), so I need a responsive engine, with good torque figure.

evil john a slip of the finger 15bhp is what I meant.

The heads on the E7J and the E6J ARE different.

Early heads the only difference is the extra hole for the CTS. Also the cooling hose set up on the clios and 19's differ, the early heads also have a straight port head.

On later engines they get a very poor port design.

why you using a pair? thats not what you want. unless the bottom ends all steel and doing 10krpm+. then yeah thats what you want.

those two carb were as standard on Alfa 33 1.3 (and others) and they were doing their job pretty good (despite 1.3 has only 85HP at 6k RPM), so why they won't be good with my engine?

my carbs have 28 choke size, main jet 122, air corrector 170.. - thats approximetly what I need for my engine!

the alfa engine is wrongly called a 1.3, its a 1.4 as its 1351cc.

Tha alfas a flat 4 so it needs 2 carbs, the IDF's were the cheapest option.

Also they are very peaky and have poor midrange on the alfas. The efi versions are much nicer to drive.

Theres little space for them on the 5, I would use 1 carb and then jet it properly, you will find you have much better low throttle response and much better midrange.

i've just been working on the car and i took some measurement.. ..there is very limited space for carb and if i'd like to use 2 of them, i'd had to remove fuel pump (and get an electric one and fuel pressure regulator) and some other things that are in the way..

..probably I'll use one 40 IDF carb (as you said), still it will be better than original carb (32 TLDR) + the linkage for single carb will be much easyer to fabricate than for duals!

PS: as I cleand both carb I found out that one is 40 IDF 83 and the other one is 40 IDF 82 so the carbs are different Rolling Eyes, there should be 2 equal carb from the same series.

I've decided to use only one 40 IDF.

Couple of days ago, I got both flanges...

...and another thing... ...could you guess what it is?

hint: it is related to carbs Wink

PS: sorry for crappy pictures.. ..later i'll post better pictures ;D
