rear brakes

ok, driving for 3 days i had a rattle, thought it was my renault caps rattling in the hole, took then out and it still done it, looked at the rear brakes and the pad had come from the caliper and was rubbing around the inside of the wheel lmao, lost the metel clip which goes there, bought 4 new ones from renault £24, put them on, now they have gone walkies again, can someone tell me the point of them being there please and how they supposed to stay there? thank you
