The 'dibs' rule

Any member can post a link to an ebay item and call dibs i.e. they are stating that they are intending to bid/buy that item, this member is the dibser.

We have a gentlemans agreement here that who calls it, gets it and no-one will bid against them.

Sometimes of course a certain item may be sought after by a number of members and the 'bastard' rule comes in to play. A competing member must reply to the dibs post with 'You bastard!' in the message body thereby signifying his/her intent to bid against the dibser. When the bastard rule has been called it is recommended that all parties communicate by PM to discuss maximum bids etc. This helps stop one member causing the auction price to go unnecessarily high.

Obviously we can't/don't enforce this but because we pride ourselves on our friendly atmosphere we hope you respect it

Update 07/04/2008: A dibs is called by using the appropriate prefix from the drop-down menu when posting a new thread. No other form of dibs announcement is valid

Edit: 2nd dibs may be called in order to develop a bidder 'hierarchy'

2nd Edit: With regards to the bastard rule - The bastard rule can not be called on anyone of a higher rank than yourself with the exception on Chris H who can call it on anyone other than the board founder (Chet T16)

3rd Edit: On rare occassions an item may be bagged a.k.a bags or bagsied. This is dibsing in its highest form. Anyone found bagsing without due cause (e.g. your car is off the road, you need it for work and this item will get it fixed and stop you loosing your job) will be banned from all forms of dibsing for the period of 1(one) week. Repeat offenders will be brought to the attention of the admin team and a punishment decided.

Update 07/04/2008: A bagsie must be called using the thread prefix otherwise the bagsie is null and void.

4th Edit: If an item which you feel you need to bagsie has already had dibs called by someone you may enter a bagsie request in the dibs thread. It is the original dibsers choice whether to withdraw the dibs to allow the bagsie. Bagsie request should be cleary marked as such and include details of why you need to bags it.

Update 07/04/2008: If a bagsie request is successful the original dibser must do 3 things, edit the original post and change the thread prefix, add a note to the original post giving details of the member who now holds the bagsie and also place the note at the end of the thread

5th Edit: Any dibs called in which the incorrect ebay link is provided shall be considered null and void until such time that the correct link is placed in the original dibs. This also includes any dibs which doesn't contain any link, just the ebay reference number and/or description

6th Edit: Dibsing items without the intention to buy but purely because you like the look of it will result in a a banning of all dibsing by that member for a period to be decided by the punishing admin team member

7th Edit: All dibs thread titles must include both the word "dibs" and a description of the item so that a member doesn't have to read all posts to avoid duplicate dibs' Threads not following this format will have the dibs declared void by the admin team.

8th Edit: 'The Mong rule'. Any member who posts up a dibs for an item that would otherwise, in all likelihood, not have been spotted by another member, thus drawing it to their attention (ie badly listed, misspelled, obscure or a part from a different car that happens to fit), shall be labelled 'MONG' and ridiculed. Winding said member up by calling 'you bastard' and so on is optional. The original dibs stands, however.

9th Edit: 'Undibs' A member who has previously dibsed an item and who now wishes to undibs it must place a 'Nigs' request within the original dibs post. Any Nigs request must be put in place with sufficient time for another member to bid/buy the item in question. Any Nigs request put forward too late may result in dibs rights being revoked for a specific period of time. N.B. A bagsie cannot be Nigsed

Update 07/04/2008: A nigs must also include a change of the thread prefix

Chris, I'm sure with a little more thought you could probably turn this into a board game and make a fortune!

Not that it's not already gloriously complicated as it is, but we need more clauses!

No, not at all, the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned!

We need to make the clauses themselves a bit harder to understand as well, just like real laws!
