Turbo H/G Repair

Okay on the way to work this morning (monday 23-04-2007!) all is going fine and dandy, pootling along and decide to overtake Mr BMW, got half way past and loose all power and a familiar chugging sound begins

Instantly i think, fuckin H/G has given out on me here, between 1 and 2 cylinders like last car, bet ya!

Call Mr AA man, he drags my sorry arse home and low and behold...........it has!

So heres a few pics as i decided to take it on myself again, and since i've done this before i got stuck straight in!

Rocker off and begin to remove turbo bits, all new to me but meh, i'll cope! learn as u go, tis the coops way!

My extra 2 Rads, upper one for chargecooler system, lower smaller one for mocal oil cooling!

alternator n bits out and cambelt chopped and ripped out as the cam belt top cover wasnt playing ball on one torx screw and decided not to risk rounding it, can wait till heads off for removal!

One slightly knackered engine mount, amazing what else u find kippered once you start! :P

shed full of bits n bats

Head off and pistons revealed, but only after an almighty battle with the turbo to manifold bolts, murder tight they were, well all appart from one of which wasnt even done up

Pistonage, spot the problem!

Head off, will strip off the manifolds and other bits tomorrow with any luck and get it sent off for degreasing and skimming

The mother of all evils, my nemesis, the F7 head gasket!

More to come folks as i go along!

I do feel another coops style engine tart up is definatly on the cards tho now! all in time for FCS!Got bored again, so little bit more in the way of minimal progress!

Concentrated on other stuff i was wanting to do before the dreaded HG but as its up on bricks, thought i'd get it done!

Charcoal canister removed, it was not connected anyway as the dump valve was taking its vac feed!

Brackets with horn attached

Horns remounted after bracket removed!

General tidy up and degrease of the bay

And removed the foglights as one doesnt work, both look a mess and its extra weight i dont need!

Going to order some scoops from tweeks to fill the gaps and direct cold air to my brakes, and also while am there buy some wrap to wrap the exhaust manifold!

Coops

Took the head for degreasing, pressure checking and skimming

Took a shed load of engine parts to the powdercoaters for project bling! :P

Also done today by my secretary

Ordered few random gaskets from renault

Ordered new top mount, new headlights and new indicator units from GSF

Sorted engine dressing parts, new vacuum pipework, nuts n bolts n a few other bits n bobs, again on order.

Fog Light scoops ordered from tweeks

blagged some exhaust wrap n ties from the bay aswell

Still to source h/g itself, bolts and cam belt set!

Got a week off end of next month, so may collect parts and then hit it all in one go that week!

Coops

its the manifold that causes the gasket to pop there.

no mate, sorry, its a different engine in a different car. my old clio 1.8 16v (standard) did the same to me, but that was after a boiling over incident.

this one i've now been told could be due to the way i've been driving it, running on boost, particularly full boost, could cause it to run lean and associated high temps due to lack of fuel could be causing detenation?sound right?

High temps due to lack of fuel would indeed cause it.

It shouldn't happen if it was mapped right

coops what extra cooling you got, i see oil rad for charge cooler, ovo the rad what about the aux water pump does that run to?

what boost you running? what pistons are they as they look standard and is that head gasket from bbtuning as even my sandard bbtuning one went pop so did ma mates in well under a year..

The pistons look skimmed, i can't see any valve cut outs. Anything over 1mm is dangerous territory so assume 1mm which iirc is around 9:1 CR

it was remapped when the side exit was added, maybe they ballsed it up, will have it mapped again once rebuilt

cant afford low comp internals, and yes its std as is

the h/g i blew lasted 4 years and 10,000 miles. oops!lol

no extra cooling for general o/e cooling system, aux water pump is a standard on clio 16v and should run when the fan does but only when ignition is off i believe, in pics main radiator is removed, the top radiator is for the charge cooler and it has its own water cooled system including water pump (electric) and header tank, and the smaller bottom one is the mocal oil cooler radiator

i do have low temp stat and fan switch tho and the car never really got above 1st big bar on temp gauge when running, so thats not the problem, running lean on boost is likely the cause, so am hoping rebuild and a map to sort it out!

OMG! That's exactly where my turbo Clio just blew! On the last mapping run It was running a little lean too.

1Bar on a not modded engine is asking for trouble.
My Engine is running 9:1 on 600mbar. And the factory headgasket is working just fine.

I can help you to get Modified pistons. 9:1 for a low price.
See image below and buy an wideband lambda with AFR gauge.

Max Engine Load: 11:1 till 11,5:1
No boost,Idle : 14:1
Light Boost: 13:1

if you have factory injectors instead of the 21Turbo ones,
500mbar is the max, With factory injectors the mixture leans out in higher revs.
