Battery life

Is it reasonable to expect more than 3 years life out of a battery?

Went to sort out Claire's polo this afternoon cos it wasn't holding its charge. It was sat on 5 Volts, it's not moved for 4 weeks. The battery is Halfords with a 3 year guarantee... guess what, it's 3 years and 4 months old Buy cheap, buy twice they say!

Incidentally as soon as I started the engine it was running on 3 cylinders... apparently it's never run any differently so god knows how long it's been like that! The cause was one of the HT leads was massively corroded at the plug end, not even salvageable by that point. Easy working on the 1.0 polo engine though, everything's labelled

Polos used to be 8 and a half pence a pack when my Dad had a Capri

i once had a battery die on me whilst driving. slowly lost power as it wouldn't hold charge. It was the middle of a rainy night and everything was on. I crawled home 15 mile at 25mph as the car wouldn't go any faster.

I discovered that the operational voltage threshold for Magneti-Marelli electronics is about 5.5-6 Volts... as the car was beginning to stammer, switching the headlights off got an extra mile or so out of the battery before it totally died.

There has to be something said for diesels with mechanical injection at this point

...that and magnetos

Right so I took a trip to Halfords tonight... 25 minutes of 'discussion' with the 4 staff members there and I got a straight exchange on the batttery as a 'gesture of goodwill'.

Cheers Chris for the motivation

Straight back home, fitted the battery, new spark plugs and HT leads which I bought earlier and turn the key... perfect!

Now the engine purrs like a kitten and the car is surprisingly nippy for a 1999 999cc Polo The car was transformed for a measly £48.

you owe me something then, what I don't know but maybe one day I will need some help with a body...

Speaking of batteries and them dying whilst kicking about with Soneji today we were in maplins, they have a sale on solar trickle chargers, £9.99 for a 1.2W 12V trickle charger, yes not much and it won't charge the battery but should maintain it a bit longer.

I'm picking one up tomorrow hopefully. never did it today as I didn't want to walk about with it.
