Give me strength

I'm sure you've all seen the adverts for this:

The Oral-B Triumph with Patented Smart Technology has a FlossActionâ„¢ head with MicroPulseâ„¢ bristles that clean deep between teeth for healthier gums and a healthier mouth

£70 for a fucking toothbrush.

I can understand that some people are so lazy or uncoordinated that even the small arm movements required to brush their teeth with a normal toothbrush are too much. Fine, get an electric toothbrush if you must.

But does anybody really need a little LCD display to tell them how long to brush their teeth? Let alone a wireless one? How come anyone that stupid has so much money that they have £70 to spend on a toothbrush? What kind of bourgeois arsehole buys this kind of shit?

I think, if I actually saw someone in a shop about to buy one of these, and I was in the right mood, I might just go up and tell them they are a cunt.

I bet if I marketed a wireless arse wiping timer, it would sell. It's wireless, see?

Apologies to those of you who have this on your christmas list

When designing a product for an established market, you have to consider what else you can do - what extra you can give the product to distinguish it from all the other vibrating whatits thingummyjigs out there!

Sometimes a big ad campaign is good - this usually costs megabucks so you have to have large resources, and probably go for more than one country with it. More usually though, product redesign is in order. You can take advantage of a redesign to:
- bring the product more up to date in terms of current market trends
- potentially lower unit cost through reduced part count or retooling
- modify the product to include extra features
- tie the product in better with your current long terms global strategy

Eventual unit cost is ALWAYS a prime consideration - go into wilkinsons and you can pick up a toothbrush for less than a pound, of course - whereas these heads might cost twice that. But ultimately what the consumer is paying for is a product with perceived added value, be that cleaning power, longevity or perhaps more importantly fashion.

In this country we are lucky enough to have a vast choice of oral hygiene products, ranging from a simple brush through to orbiting pulsating orgasming toothpaste-dispensing wonders of technology. If the £70 toothbrush does not appeal to you then either you cannot justify spending that amount on such a thing, or else the manufacturer has not done a good enough job of persuading you that is the thing you must have!
