anyone know about points on your license?

How long are points on your license valid for, for the purpose of 'totting up'?

Is it 3 or 4 years?

Now, hypothetical situation...

Say a person has 6 points on their license (2 lots of 3 points for revenue cameras). They then get caught committing a further driving offense which is worth 6 points.

Because they already have 6 points, 6 more would potentially mean a ban, so instead of a fixed penalty, it has to go to court.

However, by the time the court summons comes, 3 of the original 6 points have passed the 3 year old mark.

Can the person now just plead guilty by post and have the statutory 6 points and fine applied (ending up with 9 points)?

I think they stay for 3 years. Although apparenty these days you can just pay the £60 and go on a 3 hour rehabilitation course and get them wiped

And the question above, it would depend how long you're banned for surely - if you held 12 points at a time then that's what they're prosecuting you for, not how many you happen to have now or in the future.

But I dunno, I only have 3

Its 3 years they last on the licence, the points are giving with the same date of the incident.

Endorsements and penalty points : Directgov - Motoring

That might be some help

3 years on your licence but you have to declare them for 5 to your insurance company. lol which i think is a bit arse.

you can contest them at the 2 year point but tbh it wont matter as you still have to declare them for 5 years to the insurer.

That's the crux of the question really. If the points are applicable from date of offence, that makes it 12 points. If it's from the date of conviction it would be 9 points.

Need to get a definite answer.

Date of conviction in the case of a driving ban, which logic would dictate would apply to points as well.

my speeding points came off my license 4 years from the date of conviction (3 years afaik for totting up purposes and 4 years for insurance declaration purposes)

To get your points removed from your license you have to send a fee to DVLA but i sent mine back for a change of address and it came back with the new addy and points removed

They are added from the date of conviction. if they were from date of offence I'd have no bans left and no points at all.

Endorsements and penalty points : Directgov - Motoring

I posted this above earlier on today, and here is it in wording for those who didn't read it

Eleven years from date of conviction

If the offence is:

drinking or drugs and driving - shown on the licence as DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80
causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs – shown on the licence as CD40, CD50 and CD60
causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen for analysis – shown on the licence as CD70
Example: Date of conviction is 3 December 2002 - the endorsement must stay on the licence until 3 December 2013.

Four years from the date of conviction

If the offence is for:

reckless/dangerous driving - shown on the licence as DD40, DD60 and DD80
offences resulting in disqualification
disqualified from holding a full driving licence until a driving test has been passed
Example: Date of conviction is 28 May 2004 – the endorsement must stay on the licence until 28 May 2008.

Four years from the date of offence

In all other cases.

Example: Date of offence 10 June 2005 – the endorsement must stay on the licence until 10 June 2009.

hmmm looking at whats been posted, it seems logical that in the case of points taking you over the 12 causing a ban, they are applicable from the date of conviction, otherwise if they were applicable from the date of the offence, you would in effect have been driving around while disqualified during the time between offence and conviction.
