what brakes are they? and what size rotors?
tbh you would be better off with any of the shimano range of hydraulics. anyway now you will need new wheels then to bolt the discs to the hubs. unless your xurrent wheels have disc compatible hubs, which I doubt. Last edited by Neal; 27th November 2006 at 12:06 PM. |

Why didn't you say that you wanted to get a good bike in the beginning.
Lot more easy to buy a new one than try to tart up a cheap one. Get Deore LX as XT is over the top price wise. Very bling though, untill you leave the rear Mec on a rock or something LOL. I run a 105 - Ultegra mix on my road bike. Works if you know how to set it up. I,m a Campy man myself, but you have to go with the flow, and cost, the cheaper Campy stuff now is inferior to Shimano. My 20 year old road bike has Campagnolo super record that now goes for £95 rear mec £35 front mec second hand. Tour de France jewellry. First with titanium bolts. you'll have trouble getting 8 speed bits now, its all 9 speed these days ( for better or worse).
if you're getting a new rear cassette and chain, you'll want new front chainrings too or the difference in wear will bugger the new stuff dead quick. get a SRAM cassette and a SRAM PC69 chain. shfiters, depends what mechs you have?

Yep, Alivio is base spec Shimano.
For shifters you can go for Shimano or SRAM. I like SRAM stuff. They do the grip shift style shifters if you like those (i HATE them). All you need to look out for is that if you go for SRAM, you need to get the non-ESP versions if you're going to use them with Shimano mechs. Take your pick. No point getting anything fancy, it's just more expensive when you smash it off on a rock/tree/stump. If you'd said to begin with that you were going to be spending money and fannying around replacing bits I'd have told you not to bother and just buy one of the Merlin Malt range of complete bikes, great frames and unbeatable spec/value for money...Merlin Cycles Ltd Merlin Bikes or a second hand one. BTW the classifieds forum at Singletrack - Mountain Bike Magazine is ace for buying bits...
