righty, I found an old 4 GIG (lol) hard drive and have it all set up, on it now, windows 2000 office pro OS! gangsta! lol

I am on it the now, why? cos I felt like it and trying to sort somehting out for amber to use to browse the net only.

Anyway it appears to be IE 5. As a result I can't view vids etc with it, how can I get the later IE?

Thats the 4 gig HD sorted!

SP 4 for win 2k! lol

Now put in another old HD, 80Gig it works perfectly, on it now, even has dialogies on it!

Wish I had checked for these instead of askign amber to do it! We just forked out on a 300gig HD

Out of 5 HD's only 1 is duff, the old 120 GIG seagate! The 4, 10, 80 and nice new 300 are minto.

righty I have an old compaq deskpro, inlet pentium 2 I beleive.

I tried the 4 gig HD in it, it made th eusual noises then ran through its memory check came up to the 81920 KB ok then a few moments later

1780-DISK 0 FAILURE

tried again and same again.

Popped out memory sticks and

16384 KB OK

601-DISKETTE CONTROLLER FAILURE

on the HD theres win 2k, it works fine on this pc as i'm on it the now. It has the drivers for this pc etc installed but that shouldn't matter, is win 2k (now on service pack 4) to much for it or what?

I got a old Pentium 2 that I nicked from the firm skip. it to a little like yours, As it a right fussy sod. Are you using 40 wire or 80 wire IDE cable, and i'll take it that you've check the master/slave jummer set right, and maybe that it in IDE0 slot and not IDE1. Try it with just HD only also, and I'll give it a BIOS reset also, and detect the HD again. is it a MSI Motherboard, as that what mine is, and unless you get the stuff right it just crap's itself, or won't past the bios screen.

theres only the 1 slot for IDE drives on the mobo

bios reset, the batteries welded into it

how do you get to the bios screen on a compaq assuming you can?

F10. is there a cmos reset jumper on the motherboard?

Also some Compaq use a floppy to set the bios, if the hidden partion on the HD is lost. with the floppy, you'll be able to set the bios, and then copy the floppy over to a hidden partion, but it will wipe the hardrive, but then you won't need it after that. Best to check on the Compaq site.

I thought that would have been obvious by the fact I said IE

Anyway played a bit more with the compaq.,

Its not a pentium 2, its just a pentium.

I also like a mong only had the 4 wire ide cable in, changed to the 80 wire.

I also done the cmos jumper, so now it comes up with date and time not set etc as it should.

Thing is it will go so far then come up with press f1 to boot.

A pentium 1 ain't gonna work with a 4 gig on win2k though is it?
I have a win 95 disk, it reads then come sup a A:/ can't get it to recognise anythign else apart from B:/ which says insert disk.
