So, bought another one!

Yep, the well known and somewhat deadly (for your wallet) affliction know as valveritis has struck! I bought a red phase 1 on ebay the other day, for £82 quid!!!

Went down to Croydon today to pick it up. I knew it hadn't been run for a while (8 months) but i thought get a new battery on there and it should be ok but alas no! Well, it did start the first time but its either eaten a brand new battery in a matter of minutes (there is a dodgy earth but surely it cant go through a battery in like 5 minutes?!) or the starter motor has seized becuase it just turns over very very very slowly. Either way after about 3 hours of struggling in the fucking shit freezing cold shit British weather i admitted defeat and had to leave it there. Which is a big pain as the guy is moving house tomorrow and he really wants it gone soon as poss. May try the AA thing for the first time! but to be honest i dont really know what im gonna do as i obviously have work all week.

On the plus side though the car didnt look too bad. No rust that i could see, good leather (which will be going in my phase 2), seller said its been chipped etc (claimed it had 170+ bhp but i cant help but be a bit sceptical about that one!).

Piccies to follow (there was none on the listing)

Once ive swapped the interiors over i don't know really mate. Probably put an MOT on it and sell it on i'd imagine as i bought ANOTHER car on Saturday as well and i think my girlfriend, although being very good about it all, is beginning to lose patience! Only after a few sneaky B road blasts of course!

Does it sound like the starter is knackered to you? Or could a bad earth really drain a battery that quickly? (battery terminal was getting very hot, and smoking at one point!) The seller said it had a new starter motor not long before he stopped driving it.

Thanks for the offer mate, very good of you.

Anywhere in particular that may be likely to happen? Thing is if i do go down one day after work (which looks like it will be the case) its going to be pitch black so doing anything on it at all is going to be tricky. Plus i know next to sod all about how to fix a broken down car (hate to admit that but it is true!)

well, if he says it's had a new starter motor, I'll wager that's about the time it last ran, and the first place I'd be looking. In the dark though, you don't have much hope.

Best to use the AA/RAC trick tbh

Yeah i think you could be right there. Trying to fix a car in the cold and dark doesn't seem like the ideal solution really. Such a bitch that he can't wait till Saturday though. Plus if it was taxed i could have just rolled it out onto the road but of course it doesn't. Ah well, fun and games!

well, since electrics produre most heat where the biggest resistance is, you have a bad connection at the batt terminal, or as Neal said, a short somewhere (and then the batt terminal just happens to be the place of most resistance).

try looking at the main feed from the battery to the starter, may be shorting out on the downpipe

Check the earths, you will be supprised (like me) how quick they can shitter a battery. I had the very slow turn over problem, smoke from under the bonnet and it was bad a head/bulkhead earth. New cable it problem solved.
