follow on from road tax topic

saw on another forum this statement on road tax......

Since when did this money grabbing, wasteful, thieving government ever use funds correctly?
If this shower of fools used our Road Fund Licence for the purpose it was intended we would have the VERY BEST roads in the world.
Instead of which the RFL helps the poor MPs so they can retire on their inflation proof pensions. why should our hard earned go to fund public transport? In case you hadn't heard - its all privately owned now. Welcome to the real world, where us serfs know when we're being robbed.

i completely forgot about "public" transport not being owned by said government! hope they dont use that excuse anymore!

Quite the opposite
Our roads, despite what people like to make out, are actually not so bad.
The main problem is too many people wanting to use them!

From what i remember (this would be 15 years ago or so) your roads were better than ours too.

Also, same here on public trans, it's all private companies (at least in my state) but has public funding for lower fares. Once train service to my town starts in 2 years I'll be taking that to work. 60mi/day same route for 5 years now is getting boring.

There were some parts of the autobahn where I couldn't drive on the inside lane, it was just too rough from lorries driving over it. And this was the motorway. Not to mention they are mostly only 2 lanes and about 15% have one side of the motorway closed for rebuilding work

there are parts of the M25 like that, the Mustang had a weird track more akin to a lorry and used to jump in and out of the tramlines, scary first time it happened,
I havent been to France for a while but remember the motorways over there being a hell of a lot better, and they did roadworks at sensible hours too, and gave you plenty of warning,
in fact apart from Paris the road manners were better with all drivers moving over in plenty of time to avoid roadwork queues,
The US was fine, comfy suspension (read soft) coped well withthe masses of concrete and 4 lanes each side was a small highway
Italy was another thing

US road conditions depend on where you are... no 4 lane highways near me.

got those out there too? dang. had a wild one when i was younger. Parents tried to tame it, no such luck though...

Maine is most all 2 lane highways, there is a 30 mi section of 3 lane, on the toll highway. Which is in decent shape, but I'm not much for tolls so I avoid it. Frost heaves, cold weather, than muddy wet weather(lots of heavy load limits in the spring), salt and other ice melting chemicals(ones that degrade rubber/plastic car parts like brake lines) and a short construction period all make for crap ass roads.

It's a really nice place to live though
