clean up the rail with wire brush, should come up nice and silver as is.

paint manifolds in silver, and either black for cam cover or match to body colour.

thats what I'd do (and am doing)

Im assuming that the car in question is the one in your Av? If so then as above however go for a red rocker cover, I have a thing about these at the mo and think it would stand out rather well.

Without wishing to cause offence that'll look crap.

Only thing that should be painted is the cam cover IMO.

that statement doesn't include bracketry?

I don't think manifolds painted in silver look bad at all, just 'like' new imo.

Right here is the correct approach.

Yes a cam cover can be painted cos its big and flat and obvious so looks good. Apart from that you can divide the rest of the bay into two categories, steel and aluminium.

Steel: Bit of a mare to paint well, but there are some 1-coat paints that will stick. Paint all steel parts black, and i'm not talking about gloss. Remember this is the original colour for these parts, they were coloured mainly to put off the ineveitable rusting. Exhaust manifold you will never paint as it gets too hot. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!

Aluminium: This includes the inlet manifold, fuel rail and various brackets. Well I choose the quick and easy method which is a good sandblast to clean them then a coat of clear lacquer to protect. This will give you a light grey finish. As alternatives you can polish the aluminium (time consuming and not a very durable finish but looks smart if you keep on top of it) or paint it (you'll need an acid etch primer onto the Al)

When it comes to the crunch the best thing you can do to your engine is clean it - a brand new F-type engine would be a joy to behold

i just want my engine to be 100 percent mechanically perfect the colour is not essential, while i love what is under the bonnet i think my fave look is for it to be like it rolled off the line, clean. I rarely pop the bonnet and show off its contents to many people cos all to often where i live i see these skinny guys in the latest marks and spencer range with 45 degree baseball caps converging by open bonnets in the local tesco car park, that scene is just too chav for me, if you can make the engine look brand new then thats quite awesome, in my dreams i see an entirely transparent block so you can see the engine working its magic but i think we're a long way from that, whenever thats possible fuck youll find me with an open bonnet in any tesco or even a lidl

that said the people who spend time painting random bits in the bay with sharp results definitely deserve respect the afforementioned is merely my personal opinion on how i want my engine bay to look
